Arsenal boss Arteta handed injury crisis ahead of Man Utd match

Gabriel Magalhaes and Riccardo Calafiori were casualties of Arsenal’s 2-5 win over West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday

News Insights

  • Gabriel Magalhaes & Riccardo Calafiori were injured against West Ham.
  • Ben White & Takehiro Tomiyasu are dealing with existing knee injuries.
  • Arsenal are 2nd in the PL table.
  • Man Utd’s Lisandro Martinez & Kobbie Mainoo are suspended for this match.

Gunners manager Mikel Arteta could have a tough time putting out a full strength squad for Arsenal’s huge Premier League match against Manchester United at the Emirates on Wednesday (7:15 AM on Thursday AEST). Up to six players could miss the match with injury.

Ruben Amorim will also be without some of his players, as two starters from the Red Devils’ 4-0 win over Everton last weekend are suspended for the upcoming Arsenal vs. Manchester United game.

Gabriel & Calafiori doubts

Two of the biggest potential absences for Arsenal suffered their injuries just a few days ago.

Starting centre back Gabriel Magalhaes and left back Riccardo Calafiori both were forced off the pitch early with injuries in Arsenal’s 2-5 win against West Ham on Sunday.

Gabriel went off in the second half with an apparent head injury after taking a hit to the face from Hammers goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

He suffered a similar injury against Sporting CP in the Champions League just days earlier, so there’s a good chance that this was just a precautionary sub.

“Thanks for your support gunners!! See you on Wednesday!!” Gabriel said on social media after the match.

It’s not clear why Calafiori was subbed. Arteta mentioned after the match that the defender “has been dealing with little niggles in the last few weeks.”

White, Partey, & other Arsenal injuries

If Calafiori and Gabriel are injured, they join more than a handful of other players who could miss this Wednesday’s game.

Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu are for sure to miss the match. The versatile defenders are dealing with knee injuries. White will be back sometime next year, while the timeline is less clear for Tomiyasu.

Midfielders Thomas Partey and Mikel Merino are doubtful for the Man Utd match. The former is dealing with a recurring muscle injury. Merino has struggled with a knee injury.

Arsenal vs. Man Utd preview

Even with their injury troubles, Arsenal are huge favourites to beat Man Utd on Wednesday.

PlayUp has the Gunners as $1.42 favourites. They give Man Utd just $6.50 chances to win, which makes the Red Devils one of the biggest underdogs in EPL Matchweek 14.

We would love to tell you that the betting sites are wrong and that you should put all your money on Man Utd here, but we can’t. Our EPL predictions have Arsenal winning here and doing so comfortably.

Man Utd are a work in progress, especially in defence. Amad Diallo is not a left wingback and they don’t have enough centre backs to play Amorim’s three-at-the-back tactic.

Conclusion

They will be even more limited than normal against Arsenal with Lisandro Martinez & Kobbie Mainoo suspended for this match.

Fluke results are possible, but Arsenal should win on Wednesday.
