Djokovic battles through to the last 16 of French Open

Djokovic comes through as the winner in the latest-ever finish to a match in Roland Garros history

News Insights

  • Djokovic levels with Federer with 369 Grand Slam wins
  • Latest ever finish to a French Open match - 3:08am!
  • The match got underway at 10:40pm local time
  • The previous latest finish was between Nadal and Sinner which concluded at 01:26

The defending champion showed his ability to fight back from a deficit, in which he managed to blow his opponent away in the final two sets - conceding just three games.

Djokovic secured a 7-5, 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory which kept the Chatrier crowd fully entertained until 3:08am! The Serbian seemed to thrive in the latter stages of the match as he found his peak of the match at around 2:45 am, Lorenzo Musetti seemed as if he could not compete with the intensity of the 37-year old.

Djokovic said that Musetti ‘played a fantastic match and came very close to victory’. A common theme in recent years for opponents that have gained a two set advantage in Grand Slam events over Djokovic. He was also called for a time violation by the chair umpire to which the Serb responded with ‘have a little bit of understanding’. This did not cause a hiccup, as the 24-time Grand Slam champion bagelled his opponent in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Elsewhere, Carlos Alcaraz sets up a tricky tie against Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Canadian looked very impressive in his straight-sets victory over Ben Shelton, 6-4,6-2,6-1. Auger-Aliassime will be feeling confident as he leads the head to head 3-2, despite Alcaraz winning the previous two matches.
