The Premier League title race took another turn last week. Liverpool are now top of the table following Arsenal’s loss to Unai Emery’s Aston Villa. Things could get even crazier this week with Liverpool taking on Manchester United.

Nottingham Forest vs. Tottenham
The City Ground, 6:00 AM, Saturday, December 16
Steve Cooper survived another week at Nottingham Forest thanks to a 1-1 draw against Wolves on the road. The Welshman said after the match that it was the real Forest on display against Wolves, and that the result would spur on his team for the rest of the season.
As much as we would like him to be right, we think Forest will have to wait at least one more week before getting their season on track.
Tottenham were at their clinical best against a ragged Newcastle side last week, and came away with a 4–1 victory. They will definitely have a tougher time of things playing as the away side at The City Ground, but they should be able to take care of Forest either way.
Predicted Lineups
Nottm Forest: Turner; Boly; Murillo, Niakhate; Williams, Yates, Mangala, Kouyate, Toffolo; Gibbs-White, Elanga
Tottenham: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Davies, Udogie; Sarr, Bissouma; Johnson, Kulusevski, Son; Richarlison
Bournemouth vs. Luton Town
Vitality Stadium, 1:00 AM, Sunday, December 17
Both Bournemouth and Luton Town have been earning plenty of plaudits recently for their performances against bigger sides. Unfortunately for the Hatters, only Bournemouth has actually been able to turn those good results into concrete points.
The Cherries have not lost in five matches and have won four of those same five fixtures. Even the biggest haters cannot deny that Bournemouth’s new manager Andoni Iraola has turned things around at the Vitality Stadium. With all that being said, this match feels like one where the Cherries will come crashing back down to Earth.
We’re backing this match to end in a draw. If one side does get the win, it will be a scrappy 1-0 victory, so betting the under is another good shout here.
Predicted Lineups
Bournemouth: Neto; Smith, Zabarnyi, Senesi, Kerkez; Cook, Christie; Kluivert, Billings, Tavernier; Solanke
Luton Town: Kaminski; Mengi, Lockyer, Bell; Doughty, Nakamba, Barkley, Giles; Townsend, Adebayo, Brown
Chelsea vs. Sheffield United
Chelsea vs. Sheffield United
Chelsea continue to be one of the most confounding teams in the Premier League. We are approaching the stage where they might be one of the most chaotic teams in recent Premier League history. It’s not just the fact that they are getting poor results. It’s also the fact they look like a different club every week.
What’s even more astonishing is that the club spent over £1 billion, nearly $2 billion AUD, to look like this. Chelsea spent over $300 million AUD on two star midfielders and now the manager is saying the club needs to buy even more.
For the Chelsea fans reading this, we’re sorry. On the bright side, even your lot should be able to Sheffield United at home. The Blades are coming into this one following a 1-0 victory against Brentford, but they are bottom of the table for a reason. Chelsea should win this by multiple goals.
Predicted Lineups
Chelsea: Sanchez; Badiashile, Disasi, Silva, Colwill; Fernandez, Caicedo; Palmer, Gallagher, Mudryk; Jackson
Sheff Utd: Foderingham; Bogle, Ahmedhodzic, Robinson, Trusty; McAtee, Hamer, Souze, Brooks, Archer; McBurnie
Manchester City vs. Crystal Palace
Etihad Stadium, 1:00 AM, Sunday, December 17
Manchester City survived an early scare against Luton Town last week. They were without their star striker Erling Haaland, who is reportedly out with a week to week foot injury. He should be able to play against Crystal Palace, but don’t be surprised if Pep Guardiola decides to rest him again. Even without Haaland, Man City should be okay against Crystal Palace.
The Eagles outclassed Liverpool for much of the match last weekend, but they could not even a point from the match. This just shows you how much more talented sides like Liverpool and Manchester City are than Crystal Palace. Don’t get us wrong, talent isn’t everything and Palace have shown that they can cause problems to big sides. Unfortunately, they seem to be struggling more this year than most other seasons under Roy Hodgson. We don’t like their chances away at Man City.
Man City should win this match and probably in convincing fashion.

Predicted Lineups

Crystal Palace: Johnstone; Ward, Andersen, Guehi, Clyne; Hughes, Richards, Lerma; Olise, Edouard, Schlupp
Newcastle vs. Fulham
St. James' Park, 1:00 AM, Sunday, December 17
There are very few teams in the Premier League right now that you want to face less than Fulham. The Cottagers have scored five goals in each of their last two games. Their results were as dominant as score lines suggested too. Fulham’s attack is legit this season. Raul Jimenez is firing on all cylinders again and their wingers seem to keep scoring worldies.
Newcastle gave up four goals last weekend to Tottenham so many people are expecting a similar result this week. This makes sense, especially considering how worn down Eddie Howe’s team are, but there’s one big difference between the Tottenham match and the upcoming Fulham fixture. Newcastle are playing at home against Fulham.
The Magpies have been dominant playing at home this season. With the St. James’ Park crowd behind them, we’re willing to bet that Newcastle will get a scrappy victory this weekend.
Predicted Lineups
Newcastle: Dubravka; Hall, Lascelles, Schar, Livramento; Longstaff, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Almiron, Isak, Gordon
Fulham: Leno; Castagne, Tosin, Bassey, Robinson; Palhinha, Cairney; Iwobi, Pereira, Wilson; Jimenez
Burnley vs. Everton
Turf Moor, 3:30 AM, Sunday, December 17
This match Sean Dyche’s first match at Burnley since they sacked him in the 2021/22 Premier League season. That makes this a homecoming of sorts for Sean Dyche, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Everton are flying high and currently sit comfortably outside the relegation zone thanks to his management.
Burnley meanwhile stole a point away at Brighton last week, largely due to a dominant goalkeeping performance from 21-year-old James Trafford. Despite that result, it has overall been a very poor season for Burnley.
We expect Sean Dyche’s Everton to pile on the misery at his old stomping ground. Burnley play too open, so the Toffees should have plenty of chances on the counter to make them pay.
Predicted Lineups
Burnley: Trafford; Vitinho, O’ Shea, Beyer, Roberts, Gudmundsson, Berge, Brownhill, Odobert; Rodriguez, Amdouni
Everton: Pickford; Patterson, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Harrison, Onana, Garner, McNeil; Doucoure; Calvert-Lewin
Arsenal vs. Brighton
Emirates Stadium, 12:00 AM, Monday, December 18
Arsenal’s title chances took a major blow last week when they lost to Aston Villa on the road. They’re just one point back from Liverpool so they’re not out of the race yet but they cannot afford to slip up again this week. This is why it’s unfortunate that the Gunners are playing Brighton next.
The Seagulls have been tough opponents for Arsenal in recent years. The Gunners have won just one of their last five matches against Brighton. That one win came against a heavily depleted Brighton side around this time last year. The Seagulls got their payback later on with a 3-0 victory against the Gunners that proved to be one of the final nails in the coffin of Arsenal’s title challenge last year.
This match could really go either way. Because Arsenal are playing at home, we will give them the slight edge. Besides that, all we know is that this match will have a lot of goals.
Predicted Lineups
Arsenal: Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Odegaard, Rice, Jorginho; Saka, Jesus, Trossard
Brighton: Verbruggen; Veltman, Van Hecke, Dunk, Gross; Baleba, Gilmour; Adingra, Lallana, Mitoma; Ferguson
Brentford vs. Aston Villa
Gtech Community Stadium, 12:00 AM, Monday, December 18
Thomas Frank’s Brentford are in a rough patch of form right now. The Bees have won just one of their last five matches. Brentford’s worst loss probably came last week against Sheffield United, where they were shut out away from home. Things are not going to get easier for Brentford anytime soon either. The Ivan Toney suspension and Bryan Mbeumo injury leaves them without a consistent goal scorer for at least a month.
Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are on the opposite trajectory of Brentford right now. The Villains have lost just one of their last five matches. They are currently in third place and appear to be genuinely mounting a title challenge.
The keys to Aston Villa’s style are playing a high line and counter attacking. They won’t get many chances to do that against Brentford. This match could end 0-0 or 6-0, so we don’t suggest betting on goals totals. Backing a Villa win is good enough here.
Predicted Lineups
Brentford: Flekken; Ghoddos, Pinnock, Mee, Janelt; Onyeka, Norgaard, Baptiste; Lewis-Potter, Maupay, Wissa
Aston Villa: Martinez; Konsa, Carlos, Torres; Cash, Kamara, Luiz, Moreno; McGinn, Diaby; Watkins
West Ham vs. Wolves
London Stadium, 12:00 AM, Monday, December 18
West Ham were battered 5-0 last week. Reports have since come out, revealing that an illness swept through the club just prior to the match. Provided everyone is healthy this week we don’t think that West Ham will suffer another defeat. That doesn’t mean we think the Hammers will win though.
Gary O'Neil’s Wolves are very good at keeping games tight. Just two of their 16 Premier League matches so far have been decided by more than one goal. Wolves have everything it takes to cause a side like West Ham problems, especially if any Hammers’ players are still suffering from the illness that brought them down against Fulham.
Our soccer betting experts have this one marked down as a draw, but if you wanted to pick a winner West Ham is probably the best pick.

West Ham: Areola; Coufal, Zouma, Aguerd, Emerson; Alvarez, Ward-Prowse; Kudus, Soucek, Paqueta; Bowen

Liverpool vs. Manchester United
Anfield, 2:30 AM, Monday, December 18
Liverpool finished Matchweek 16 at the top of the Premier League table. It’s too early to say whether the Reds are genuine Premier League title favourites, but some of the betting sites are starting to shift their odds that way. Manchester United, meanwhile, were embarrassed 3-0 at home against a buoyant Bournemouth side.
It’s no wonder then that most soccer experts are predicting a huge Liverpool win here. In most people’s eyes, the question is not whether Liverpool will win, but by how many goals. We are choosing to be a little more cautious.
Jurgen Klopp’s men were terrible for 90% of the match against Crystal Palace last week. Manchester United won’t win at Anfield, but they won’t be blown out 7-0 either. Our EPL betting experts think this will be a surprisingly tight match where both teams score.
