EPL 2023/24 Matchweek 29

EPL Matchweek 29 takes place during a crowded FA Cup weekend, which means there are just four matches this week. That doesn’t mean that there’s not a lot to look forward to though. These matches include a big West Ham vs Aston Villa match that could have ramifications on the race for European places

Keep reading to see our EPL Matchweek 29 predictions and best bets for West Ham vs. Aston Villa and the other three fixtures being played this weekend.

Matchweek 29 Fixtures

Burnley vs. Brentford

Tip

Turf Moor, 2:00 AM, Sunday, March 17

EPL Matchweek 29 starts off with a battle between Burnley and Brentford at Turf Moor on Sunday.

The Clarets shocked our soccer betting experts last week with a 2-2 draw against David Moyes’ solid West Ham side. We don’t think they’ll stun us again this week though. Before their draw against the Hammers, Burnley had lost four straight matches by a combined score of 13-1.

Brentford, meanwhile, held Arsenal close for 86 minutes until Kai Havertz scored an 86th-minute winner for the Gunners. The Bees have won just one of their last six matches, but they’ve played very well in those matches. Playing a side as poor as Burnley could be just what the Bees need to get out of their rut.

The last time Burnley and Brentford played, Thomas Frank’s side hammered the Clarets 3-0. Given the current form of these two teams, we’re expecting another win for Brentford on Sunday, but not just that. We think this could be a huge win for the Bees.

Brentford had 10 shots on target and 23 overall shots in their win against Burnley back in October. The Clarets allow the third most shots on target per 90 minutes in the Premier League. Brentford have scored in 13 of their last 14 matches, and have Ivan Toney back, who is firing on all cylinders. The Bees should have plenty of chances to score and Burnley, so expect lots of goals in this one.

Most sports betting sites have set the Burnley vs. Brentford Over/Under at 2.5 Goals. We think this is very low, considering Burnley’s leaky defence and Brentford’s clinical attack. Our best bet for this match is to hammer the over.

Luton Town vs. Nottingham Forest

Kenilworth Road, 2:00 AM, Sunday, March 17

With less than a third of the season left to go, we can safely call this match a relegation six-pointer. Luton Town are in 18th place on 21 points. Nottingham Forest are in 17th with 24 points. The Reds have a +1 goal differential over Luton now, so if they lose this weekend, they will almost certainly be in the relegation zone heading into Matchweek 30.

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo appears to be feeling the pressure. The Portuguese manager called out the referees in a passionate speech following his side’s 1-0 loss to Brighton last week. The referees in that match arguably should have sent off Brighton midfielder Jakub Moder.

Luton Town played Brighton’s bitter rivals, Crystal Palace, last week and came away with a 1-1 draw. The Hatters have done well with their backs against the wall all season long, especially playing at home.

Rob Edwards’ Luton Town side have gotten good results against Liverpool, Newcastle, Wolves, and Brighton at Kenilworth Road this season. They’ve also nearly gotten points at home against Premier League giants Arsenal, Chelsea, and Man City.

Nottingham Forest, meanwhile, have been terrible away from home. Only Burnley and Sheffield United have a worse away record in the Premier League this season than the Reds. Nuno, who was hired on December 20, 2023, has just one away win to his name as Nottingham Forest manager.

Current form and Nottingham Forest’s terrible road record points to this one being a for the Hatters.

Fulham vs. Tottenham

Tip

Craven Cottage, 4:30 AM, Sunday, March 17

One of the three EPL Matchweek 29 matches that was not postponed is a London Derby, and one we’re very happy to see. Fulham vs. Tottenham is a matchup between two great managers.

Fulham’s Marco Silva has a reputation as a tricky manager who is able to instil in his sides the exact tactics necessary to counter their opposition. Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is a borderline ideologue for attacking, high-pressing soccer.

Postecoglou’s tactics smothered Aston Villa last week, and led to the Lilywhites getting a dominating 4-0 victory. Fulham, meanwhile, ran up against a side like themselves and fell 1-2 to Gary O’Neil’s Wolves at the Molineux.

The last time these two played was in October. Spurs came away from that match convincing 2-0 victors. It’s hard to say what one can take from that match though, considering how bad Fulham have been away from home this season. These sides also played in August in the FA Cup. Fulham hosted the match and won on penalties after drawing 1-1 in regular time.

More recently, Fulham have won three out of their last five matches, including a 2-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford. Tottenham have also won three out of their last five.

Spurs have scored in every Premier League match they’ve played this season. The only time they’ve been shut out was in the FA Cup against Manchester City. This is bad news for Fulham, who have kept just one clean sheet in their last six matches.

Our EPL Matchweek 29 predictions for this match are a Spurs win, both teams to score, and at least three overall goals in the match.

West Ham vs. Aston Villa

Tip

London Stadium, 1:00 AM, Monday, March 1

Besides being a battle of sides who both wear claret and sky blue, West Ham vs. Aston Villa could have major implications on the race for European places in the Premier League this season.

Despite their loss to Tottenham last week, a top four place and Champions League soccer is still on the table for Aston Villa this season. West Ham, meanwhile, are in 7th place with Brighton and Wolves right on their heels. A slip up from either side here could derail their chances at securing Champions League or Europa League soccer next season.

Now that you know the stakes, let’s get into our EPL Matchweek 29 predictions for this fixture.

West Ham are on a three match unbeaten streak, while Aston Villa have won three out of their last five in the Premier League. The tricky thing for making predictions for this match is that both sides have not looked good against top opposition recently.

Aston Villa’s three most recent wins each came against teams in the bottom half of the league. Two of those three wins were against teams in the bottom four. The Villains haven’t beaten a top-half team since December when they beat Arsenal 1-0. Since then, Villa have lost to Man Utd twice, Newcastle, and Tottenham.

West Ham are in a similar boat. The Hammers have won just twice in 2024, and both those victories were against teams 15th or lower in the league table. To make matters worse, West Ham have been absolutely embarrassed multiple times this year. They went on a three-match losing streak in February where they were outscored 11-0 by Manchester United, Arsenal, and Nottingham Forest.

With both teams on such inconsistent forms, it’s hard to pick a winner, but we’re going with Aston Villa. West Ham’s advanced numbers show they are very leaky on defence. Aston Villa’s strikers should have a good few chances against the Hammers.
