Arsenal vs. Brighton
Emirates Stadium, 9:30 PM, Saturday, August 31
Arsenal and Brighton both won their opening two Premier League games. One team’s perfect record will end this weekend. Our money is on Arsenal to stay perfect.
The Gunners shut out the Seagulls in both their matches last season. Overall, Arsenal have won three of their last four against Brighton. Beyond recent history, Mikel Arteta should be confident about his side’s ability to create chances against the Seagulls.
Brighton were extremely open against Manchester United last weekend. Had Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho been more clinical–or able to stay onside–the Red Devils could have easily beaten Brighton. Arsenal’s attackers are far more clinical than Man Utd’s. They should have plenty of chances to score.
Our EPL predictions for this match is an easy win for Arsenal.
Predicted Lineups
Arsenal: Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Timber; Odegaard, Partey, Rice; Saka, Havertz, Trossard
Brighton: Steele; Veltman, van Hecke, Dunk, Estupinan; Baleba, Milner; Minteh, Pedro, Mitoma; Welbeck
Brentford vs. Southampton
Gtech Community Stadium, 12:00 AM, Sunday, September 1
Southampton dominated possession in a loss for the second straight match in a row. The Saints had 65% possession but just five shots in their 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest last weekend.
Brentford, meanwhile, struggled to keep up with a surging Liverpool side under their manager Arne Slot. Southampton should be a much simpler challenge for the Bees.
Thomas Frank’s are very comfortable playing as the more passive side with less possession. Against Saints specifically, Brentford have dominated. They’ve beaten Southampton by a combined score of 8-0 in their last three matches.
This Southampton side is better at keeping the ball than those sides were though, so we’re not sure Brentford will score as many goals here.
We’re taking Brentford to win and the UNDER on goals as our best bets for this match.
Predicted Lineups
Brentford: Flekken; Roerslev, Collins, Pinnock, Ajer; Jensen, Norgaard, Janelt, Lewis-Potter; Mbeumo, Wissa
Southampton: McCarthy; Harwood-Bellis, Bednarek, Stephens; Sugawara, Smallbone, Downes, Aribo, Walker-Peters; Armstrong, Brereton-Diaz
Everton vs. Bournemouth
Goodison Park, 12:00 AM, Sunday, September 1
Bournemouth could only manage to get a draw last week against Newcastle after a controversial handball decision went against them in the final minutes of the match. Everton’s match was much less controversial. Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs put four past the Toffees in a 4-0 drubbing.
After starting the season with two terrible losses, a lot of soccer betting experts are starting to worry about Everton. They’ve definitely not impressed us so far, but we are not going to write them off just yet.
The Toffees lost four of their first five matches to start last season. They finished the season with enough points to finish in tenth, had they not been given a points deduction.
Everton have won six of their last seven matches at home against Bournemouth. We back them to turn their season around and get another win this weekend.
Predicted Lineups
Everton: Pickford; Dixon, Tarkowski, Keane, Mykolenko; Iroegbunam, Gueye; Harrison, Doucoure, McNeil; Calvert-Lewin
Bournemouth: Neto; Araujo, Zabarnyi, Senesi, Kerkez; Cook, Christie; Semenyo, Scott, Tavernier; Evanilson
Ipswich Town vs. Fulham
Portman Road, 12:00 AM, Sunday, September 1
After starting their season with two of the toughest Premier League matches possible, Ipswich Town host Fulham in what could be a very winnable game for the Tractor Boys.
Fulham were notoriously poor away from home last season. The Cottagers won just four road matches last season. Only the three relegated sides had fewer away wins.
Marco Silva’s side have been considerably more aggressive this year than last though. They are also much more talented than Ipswich. We expect them to get the win on Saturday, but the Tractor Boys could make it difficult.
Fulham allowed 1.78 xG to Leicester City last week. Ipswich are much better at creating chances than Liecester and will have a packed Portman Road behind them.
Fulham should win, but we like Ipswich to score at least a goal.
Predicted Lineups
Ipswich: Muric; Johnson, Tuanzebe, Woolfenden, Greaves, Davis; Hutchinson, Morsy, Luongo, Szmodics; Delap
Fulham: Leno; Tete, Diop, Bassey, Robinson; Pereira, Lukic; Traore, Smith Rowe, Iwobi; Muniz
Leicester City vs. Aston Villa
King Power Stadium, 12:00 AM, Sunday, September 1
In our EPL predictions last week, we picked Fulham to easily beat Leicester City. The Foxes proved us wrong and held their own against the Cottagers. However, they still lost the match 2-1. Aston Villa also lost last week in a top-four clash against Arsenal. They frankly didn’t look that convincing either.
Despite the poor performance, Aston Villa are a lock to win against Leicester. Frankly, we are kind of surprised that the betting sites are giving Leicester City such good odds.
Leicester have comfortably looked like one of the worst teams in the league this season and will be more fatigued than Villa because of their League Cup match against Tranmere Rovers. Villa did not have a midweek match this week.
Predicted Lineups
Leicester: Hermansen; Justin, Vestergaard, Faes; Fatawu, Winks, Ndidi, Kristiansen; Buonanotte, Vardy, De Ajew
Aston Villa: Martinez; Maatsen, Konsa, Torres, Digne; Onana, Tielemans; Bailey, Rogers, McGinn; Watkins
Nottingham Forest vs. Wolves
The City Ground, 12:00 AM, Sunday, September 1
Earlier in our EPL predictions, we said that it is too early to start worrying about Everton. We do not feel the same way about Wolves. Gary O’Neil’s side were battered 6-2 by Chelsea last week and looked completely lost defensively without their talisman Max Kilman, who they sold to West Ham this offseason.
Even before they sold Kilman, the cracks were starting to show at Wolves. They have just one win in their last 12 matches and earned only 5 points out of a possible 36 in that time.
Nottingham Forest, meanwhile, looked really impressive against Southampton. Despite not having much of the ball, the Reds got off 23 shots, including 8 on target.
Forest are not as talented as Chelsea, but they are just as direct. They are also undefeated in their last four matches against Wolves. We expect Forest to give Wolves plenty of problems and to get the win on Saturday.
Predicted Lineups
Nottm Forest: Sels; Williams, Milenkovic, Murillo, Aina; Sangare, Anderson; Elanga, Gibbs-White, Hudson-Odoi; Wood
Wolves: Sa; Doherty, Mosquera, Toti, Ait-Nouri; Gomes, Lemina; Hwang, Podence, Cunha; Strand Larsen
West Ham vs. Manchester City
London Stadium, 2:30 AM, Sunday, September 1
West Ham were at their clinical best last week in their 2-0 away win against Crystal Palace. Despite their strong performance, we’re not sure they stand a chance against Manchester City this weekend.
Pep Guardiola’s side look just as dominant this season as they did last year. They have started their 2024/25 campaign off with two convincing wins against Chelsea and Ipswich. Erling Haaland scored four goals in those two matches.
City as a team scored three goals in each of their last three matches against West Ham. The Hammers scored just two goals combined in those same three fixtures. In fact, West Ham haven’t beaten Man City in the league since 2015.
Our EPL predictions have Manchester City beating West Ham by at least two goals.
Predicted Lineups
West Ham: Areola; Coufal, Mavropanos, Kilman, Emerson; Rodriguez, Soucek; Bowen, Paqueta, Kudus, Antonio
Man City: Ederson; Lewis, Akanji, Dias, Gvardiol; Kovacic, Silva; Savio, De Bruyne, Grealish; Haaland
Chelsea vs. Crystal Palace
Stamford Bridge, 10:30 PM, Sunday, September 1
Chelsea may have finally figured it out. The Blues won 6-2 away at Wolves last week thanks to a pair of brilliant performances from Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke. We have seen false dawns from Chelsea before though. This week we will find out whether they are the real deal or not.
This week is also a pivotal matchweek for Crystal Palace. After finishing last season as one of the best teams in the league, the Eagles now look like one of the worst. Palace have 0 points through two matches and seemingly cannot buy a goal.
Given their struggles so far, we like Chelsea to win this match. We expect Palace to give them a tougher test than Wolves though.
Predicted Lineups
Chelsea: Sanchez; Gusto, Fofana, Colwill, Cucurella; Caicedo, Fernandez; Madueke, Palmer, Neto; Jackson
Palace: Henderson; Richards, Guehi, Riad; Munoz, Wharton, Lerma, Mitchell; Sarr, Mateta, Eze
Newcastle vs. Tottenham
St. James' Park, 10:30 PM, Sunday, September 1
Newcastle may be in sixth place now, but Eddie Howe’s side have quietly been one of the biggest underperformers in the Premier League so far this season.
The Magpies were very fortunate to get a 1-0 win after going down a man in the first half against Southampton in Matchweek 1. Last week, Newcastle managed to come away with a point against Bournemouth after a controversial refereeing decision ruled out the Cherries’ match-winning goal.
Tottenham also struggled in Matchweek 1 against Leicester. They showed their class last week against Everton, winning 4-0.
The last three league matches between these two sides had over four goals. Newcastle won two of the three. As much as we would like to back them again, the Magpies have not impressed us so far and have a very injured back line.
We think Tottenham will win this match comfortably.
Predicted Lineups
Newcastle: Pope; Livramento, Krafth, Burn, Kelly; Longstaff, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Barnes, Isak, Gordon
Tottenham: Vicario; Porro, Romero, van de Ven, Udogie; Bissouma, Sarr; Kulusevski, Maddison, Odobert; Son
Manchester United vs. Liverpool
Old Trafford, 1:00 AM, Monday, September 2
The Arne Slot era at Liverpool is off to a perfect start. The Reds have won their first two matches and look to be just as strong as they were under Jurgen Klopp. Brentford and Ipswich are far from the biggest tests though. Frankly, Manchester United aren’t either.
Liverpool have beaten Man Utd by three or more goals in half of their matches against each other since the 2021/22 season. The Red Devils have also been very poor mentally since Erik Ten Hag took over.
In the 30 years before Ten Hag joined Manchester United, the club lost two matches after the 90th minute. Since Ten Hag took over, they have lost six matches in added time. That includes last week when the Red Devils let Brighton score a match winner against them in the 95th minute.
Had Manchester United shown us more this season, we might back them to get a draw or even a win here. Because they’ve not shown us anything though, we’re picking Liverpool to win.
Predicted Lineups
Man Utd: Onana; Mazraoui, De Ligt, Martinez, Dalot; Casemiro, Mainoo; Diallo, Fernandes, Garnacho; Zirkzee
Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Szoboszlai, Diaz; Jota
