EPL 2023/24 Matchweek 5

The first international break of the season is over. Premier League football is back. Matchweek 5 kicks off this Saturday night with Wolves vs. Liverpool. It ends with Nottingham Forest vs. Burnley early on Tuesday morning. Read about those matches and all the ones in between in this EPL matchweek 5 preview. We have EPL betting tips, picks, best bets, and insights for every Matchweek 5 game.

Matchweek 5 Fixtures

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs. Liverpool

Molineux Stadium, 9:30 PM, Saturday, September 16

Wolves were tipped to be one of the worst teams in the Premier League this season. So far, they have lived up to the billing. Gary O'Neil’s men have lost every game this season, except for their 1-0 win against lowly Everton in week three.

Liverpool have looked shaky at times, but have so far got the job done in every game this season. Besides a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in week one, the Reds have looked convincing in every match this season.

Liverpool battered Aston Villa 3-0 in their last match. We expect something similar against Wolves. To their credit, Wolves scored two goals against Palace in their last time out. It would not be surprising to see them get one goal against Liverpool.

Predicted Lineups

Wolves: Sa; Semedo, Dawson, Kilman, Ait-Nouri; Sarabia, Gomes, Lemina, Neto; Cunha, Silva

Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Matip, Robertson; Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Endo; Salah, Nunez, Diaz

Aston Villa vs. Crystal Palace

Villa Park, 12:00 AM, Sunday, September 17

This matchup is not one of the most high profile ones of matchweek five, but it could be one of the most exciting.

Palace have so far continued their strong trend of playing attacking football under the revitalised Roy Hodgson. The Eagles played in a five-goal thriller against Wolves before putting up four goals against Plymouth Argyle in the EFL Cup before the international break.

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa side have also scored loads of goals to start the season. The Villains have scored three goals or more in all but two of their six club matches this season. In those two games where Villa did not score three or more, they gave up three goals. Basically, if Villa do not score lots of goals, they lose by lots of goals.

We expect lots of goals in this one. As for the winner, Villa have more talent and a better coach, so we give them a slight edge.

Fulham vs. Luton Town

Craven Cottage, 12:00 AM, Sunday, September 17

Fulham have been one of the most confusing teams of the 2023-24 Premier League seasons. At times, like in their 2-2 draw against Arsenal, the Cottagers look to be a solid team. However 3-0 and 5-1 defeats to Brentford and Man City make us doubt that.

Luton Town, meanwhile, have looked like one of the worst teams in the league. Things aren’t all bad for the Hatters though. They’ve shown flashes at times and are bound to get their first point of the season soon. With that being said, we think Luton will have to wait a little longer to get some points on the board.

Fulham have been inconsistent. This is true, but even at their worst, Marco Silva’s squad should beat Luton.

Manchester United vs. Brighton and Hove Albion

Old Trafford, 12:00 AM, Sunday, September 17

At the end of every matchday, one Big 6 club becomes that week’s crisis club. Every club’s goal is to not be the crisis club going into an international break. Manchester United failed to achieve that goal.

Not only do Manchester United look out of sorts on the field right now, the Red Devils are dealing with messes off it. Winger Anthony has been accused of sexual assault and domestic violence by multiple women. Less serious issues include Jadon Sancho and Erik ten Hag apparently feuding and numerous injuries in midfield and defence.

Brighton are about as far away from a crisis club as you can get in the Premier League right now. Roberto De Zerbi’s Seagulls went into the international break with good vibes following a 3-1 victory over Newcastle thanks to an Evan Ferguson hat trick.

Frankly, we cannot believe that most betting sites have ManU as favourites in this one. We back Brighton to win.

Brighton: Steele; Veltman, Van Hecke, Dunk, Estupinan; Gross, Gilmour, Dahoud; March, Pedro, Mitoma

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Sheffield United

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, 12:00 AM, Sunday, September 17

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham side have been one of the most exciting teams in the Premier League so far. Spurs are playing on the front foot, counter attacking, and scoring goals. Most importantly, they look like they are having fun. Both Heung-min Son and Dejan Kulusevski have spoken about how fun it is to play for an attacking manager compared to the styles they played before under José Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

Sheffield United got their first point of the season last week in a 2-2 draw against Everton. It is too early to call that match a relegation six-pointer, but it did see the Blades stay out of the relegation zone for another week.

Spurs should beat Sheffield United, but we would not be surprised if it is a low scoring match. The Blades will be much more compact than Burnley, who Spurs battered 5-2 in week 4.

West Ham United vs. Manchester City

London  Stadium, 12:00 AM, Sunday, September 17

Unfortunately for West Ham fans, this week should likely be their last in the top four. The Hammers have started off very strong, and surprised many with big wins over Chelsea and Brighton. However, beating Man City is a whole other proposition.

The Citizens have hit the ground running and look like they could be runaway Premier League champions for yet another season. As boring as it is to predict, Man City should win this one, though they will have to work harder than they did against Fulham and Sheffield United.

To give West Ham credit, they have looked very solid this season, particularly in defence. They play in a robust low block, hoping to score goals on the counter. With that in mind, it would not be too surprising if this were to be a low-scoring match — and a draw isn’t out of the question.

Newcastle United vs. Brentford

St. James' Park, 2:30 AM, Sunday, September 17

Newcastle come into this match on a three game losing streak. The Magpies have lost to Man City, Liverpool, and Brighton, and currently find themselves just 14th in the table. Brentford are a level below the three teams Newcastle have lost too so far this season, but we like their chances to get something from this match.

Brentford play solid defensive football and know how to hurt attacking teams like Newcastle. Additionally, Thomas Frank’s men are very resilient. Resiliency is something Newcastle have lacked in recent matches. The Magpies’ inability to stay in a game mentally could especially haunt them this weekend if Newcastle players are already looking ahead to their big Champions League match against AC Milan on Tuesday.

It might be too much to expect Brentford to win this match, but we back them to get something. Because of this, Draw or Brentford at $2.48 from BoomBet is one of our favourite bets for this weekend.

Bournemouth vs Chelsea

Vitality Stadium, 11:00 PM, Sunday, September 17

Out of all the clubs who have struggled to start the season, Chelsea is one of the most disappointing. The Blues’ new ownership, led by Todd Boehly, have spent over £1 billion on new players and still do not have a Champions League quality goalscorer. Injuries are partly to blame for this, but there really should be no excuses for Chelsea’s poor performances against sides like West Ham and Nottingham Forest.

Because of just how disappointing they have been, we expect Chelsea to come back with a bang against Bournemouth. It will not be easy though. The Cherries have looked surprisingly competent under new manager Andoni Iraola. However, they do not have the talent to challenge Chelsea.

We predict a Chelsea victory and at least two goals from the Blues.

Everton vs. Arsenal

Goodison Park, 1:30 AM, Monday, September 18

Will this be the year Everton finally go down? This is the question Premier League fans are asking about Everton seemingly every week. Unfortunately for Toffees fans, we think people will still be asking this question after matchweek five.

Arsenal, even with injuries to Thomas Partey, Jurrien Timber, and Gabriel, are too good for Everton. The Toffees will need a Sean Dyche masterclass and buckets full of luck to get anything out of this match.

The only question you should be asking yourself about this Everton vs. Arsenal is by how much Arsenal will win. Our EPL predictions have it being at least a 2-goal victory. Virtually all betting sites in Australia have the over/under set at 2.5 goals, so backing the over may be a smart bet if you are more optimistic about Arsenal’s goal-scoring ability than we are.

Nottingham Forest vs Burnley

The City Ground, 4:45 AM, Tuesday, September 19

For all the talk of Vincent Kompany’s “new Burnley,” the Clarets are still yet to get a single point in this Premier League season. Kompany’s men started the season with a 3-0 loss to Man City, before losing 3-1 to Villa. Burnley capped off the first quarter of the season by losing 5-2 against Spurs. However, it is not all doom and gloom at Turf Moor. Burnley beat Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup.

Most sports betting sites do not think Burnley can beat Forest for the second time this season on Tuesday. We disagree with them. Both sides put out strong lineups in their cup matchup. Additionally, the 1-0 cup win for Burnley was away at Forest. There is no reason to think Burnley cannot pull off another upset on Tuesday.
