Matchweek 6 Fixtures

Crystal Palace vs. Fulham

Selhurst Park, 12:00 AM, Sunday, September 24

Both Palace and Fulham had disappointing results last weekend. However, Fulham were still able to come away from their fixture with three points.

Fulham laboured against a surprisingly difficult Luton Town side, but still managed to come away with 1-0 victory. Palace meanwhile threw away a 1-0 lead against Villa after giving up three goals in the last 27 minutes of the match.  Both sides will be looking to do much better this weekend.

Most betting sites have Palace, the home side, as favourites for this match. We are inclined to agree with them, but there really isn't much that separates these sides. Palace will probably win, but Fulham have a chance to come away with something, so betting on the amount of goals is probably a safer bet.

Luton Town vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers

Kenilworth Road, 12:00 AM, Sunday, September 24

We are six weeks into the 2023/24 EPL season and Luton Town still do not have a point. The Hatters are the only team in the Premier League without a point so far, and it appears to be starting to get to them.

Luton’s manager Rob Edwards recently took aim at BBC pundit Garth Crooks for suggesting that Luton are not even trying to win this season and that the club has already accepted relegation this season.

As great as it would be to see Luton quiet the critics and get a result at home at Kenilworth Road, we can never be confident about a side with so little Premier League talent. Wolves showed they still have plenty of talent on their roster when they stunned Liverpool early last week, so we are going to back them against Luton. Wolves should win this one.

Manchester City vs. Nottingham Forest

Etihad Stadium, 12:00 AM, Sunday, September 24

Manchester City went down 1-0 just before halftime to Serbia’s Red Star Belgrade midweek in the Champions League. This did not last long as Manchester City showed their typical dominance in the second half. This kind of dominance is what we expect to see against Forest this weekend.

Nottingham Forest nearly completed a comeback of their own on Monday against Burnley, but could only manage to come away with a 1-1 draw. Forest would need to be extremely lucky to come away with a similar result against Man City.

Even if City rest their major stars, bench players like Jack Grealish, Josko Gvardiol, and Jeremy Doku will be fresh and ready to inflict harm on Forest. Don’t get us wrong, the Reds have what it takes to cause problems for big sides, but getting a result away at City is just too big of an ask.

Brentford vs. Everton

Gtech Community Stadium, 2:30 AM, Sunday, September 24

Brentford have had the upper hand on Everton in three of their five meetings since the Bees came up from the Championship in 2021. Everton’s only victory against Brentford since 2021 came in the FA Cup. We don’t think that stat is going to change after this weekend.

It’s genuinely hard to say anything positive about Everton right now. Their two forward players had just 31 touches combined last week against Arsenal. The Toffees’ as a team have scored just two goals all season, which is worse than any team in the Premier League bar Luton Town who also have scored just two goals.

Brentford are in the top 9 for both goal scoring and expected goals. If current statistical trends hold, the Bees should win and shut out Everton. While stats often lie, we think these ones will bear out on Saturday. Brentford should win this game easily.

Burnley vs. Manchester United

Turf Moor, 5:00 AM, Sunday, September 24

Burnley got their first point of the season this week against Nottingham Forest, but it is hard not to feel disappointed if you are a Clarets fan. Burnley looked dominant for significant stretches and even scored the winner before it was unfortunately ruled out by VAR.

As disappointed as Burnley fans may feel, their disappointment pales in comparison to what Manchester United fans are going through right now. The club is dysfunctional at every level and in the midst of an injury crisis and multiple off-the-field scandals. Most recently, it was announced right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka will miss two months with a muscular injury.

Despite the crisis at Man U, all betting sites in Australia have them as favourites against Burnley. We think they are right to do so. The Red Devils should have enough offensive firepower left to get past Burnley.

Arsenal vs. Tottenham Hotspur

Emirates Stadium, 11:00 PM, Sunday, September 24

The first North London Derby of the season is just a few days away. Based on Arsenal and Tottenham’s current form, this one has the potential to be one of the most exciting Arsenal-Tottenham derby matches in years.

Both Spurs and the Gunners are playing exciting football under innovative attacking managers. Arsenal probably have more talent and will absolutely have a strong home advantage playing at the Emirates, but this game could really go either way.

Most betting sites disagree with us and have made Arsenal fairly big favourites, so there is value if you choose to back Tottenham in this one. We think this will be a draw, so we like the Draw No Bet and Double Chance markets for this match.

Chelsea vs. Aston Villa

Stamford Bridge, 11:00 PM, Sunday, September 24

Chelsea continued their poor form to start the season last week against Bournemouth where they failed to score yet again. On the bright side, Chelsea didn’t let the Cherries score, so that match finished 0-0.

Villa are flying high despite the fact they nearly lost last week. It took Unai Emery’s men 87 minutes to score against Palace. After getting that first goal, Villa mounted a comeback and finished the game as 3-1 victors.

The question in this match is which Villa will show up. If the Villa team that scored three goals in less than 30 minutes shows up, they should beat Chelsea easily, even if Chelsea plays well. If the Villa who struggled against Palace and Newcastle earlier in the season show up, Chelsea will win.

We think a draw is the most likely outcome. Chelsea is playing at home, so betting on the Blues would not be a bad bet either.

Liverpool vs. West Ham United

Anfield Stadium, 11:00 PM, Sunday, September 24

Liverpool survived a late scare from Wolves last week in a dreaded 12:30 PM game for Jurgen Klopp’s men. Thankfully for Klopp, this game won’t be until Sunday afternoon, and West Ham have a European game of their own to worry about in midweek.

The Hammers have looked incredible at times this season, having earned convincing victories over Chelsea and Brighton. However, when they go up against truly elite players, West Ham are liable to be overpowered. Last week, Man City surgically took apart the Hammers in a 3-1 match where City took 29 shots and 15 shots on target.

It is true that Liverpool’s defence has looked vulnerable at times, so West Ham is fairly likely to score. Even if they do, we back Liverpool to score more than West Ham. West Ham’s full backs Emerson Palmieri and Vladimir Coufal will struggle to cope against wingers like Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz, which could make the difference in this one. In front of a raucous Anfield crowd, Liverpool should win.

Brighton and Hove Albion vs. Bournemouth

Amex Stadium, 11:00 PM, Sunday, September 24

Brighton and their brilliant play style are one of the biggest stories in the Premier League right now. The Seagulls completely outclassed a dismal Manchester United side last week, and came away from Old Trafford with all three points. One of Brighton’s three goals in that match came after a 30-pass sequence of play.

Bournemouth held on for a 0-0 draw against Chelsea last weekend. While the Cherries had just 35% possession in that match, their performance in that match was much more than a defensive masterclass, as some people have said. Bournemouth had many counter attacking chances and had just two fewer shots on goal than Chelsea.

Brighton play midweek against AEK Athens in the Europa League, but we don’t expect them to have tired legs considering how much they rotated their squad against ManU. Brighton should win this South Coast derby match. However, the Seagulls haven’t shut anyone out this season, so we think Bournemouth will score at least one goal this Sunday.

Sheffield United vs. Newcastle United

Bramall Lane, 1:30 AM, Monday,  September 25

The last match of EPL Matchweek 6 will either be a highly competitive defensive battle or a bit of a downer.

Despite being 17th in the EPL table, Sheffield United have looked very solid at the back. The Blades have given up just 9 goals so far, which is less than some teams who are ahead of them in the table like Aston Villa, Manchester United, and Fulham.

Newcastle United also have a good defence. However, and unfortunately for Magpies fans, Newcastle is also having trouble scoring right now. Eddie Howe’s men have scored more than one goal in just one match this season. And that match was the season opener against Villa, which was over a month ago. In their most recent match, Newcastle drew 0-0 with Milan in the Champions League.

Given the mismatch in quality, Newcastle will probably win.  Nonetheless, goals won’t come easily in this one, making it hard to guarantee much else about this match.
