Tottenham Hotspur captain Heung-min Son has responded to Ange Postecoglou’s fiery comments after the club’s 2-0 loss to title favourites Manchester City last week. The big Australian told press that Spurs were fragile “outside the club, inside the club, everywhere.”
Son told the Evening Standard that he admires Postecoglou’s personality and his approach to the game. The Korean said he’s “all in” for whatever the 58-year-old has in store for Spurs next season.
Postecoglou’s comments
Former Australia manager Ange Postecoglou continued to ruffle feathers in England this week after Tottenham’s 2-0 loss to Man City on Tuesday. The 58-year-old reportedly took issue with the way the media discussed the match going into it and how that attitude was picked up by Spurs fans, staff, and even media.
If Tottenham won the Man City match, it would have opened the door for their bitter rivals Arsenal to win the title. This was the prevailing narrative heading into the match. According to the Athletic, the attitude was also present inside Spurs. One official joked about playing a youth side against Man City. This incensed Postecoglou.
“I think the last 48 hours have revealed the foundations are fairly fragile,” he said after the match, “Outside the club, inside the club, everywhere.
“It has been an interesting exercise. It's just my observations. I'm not going to tell you more. You can make your own assessment of what happened.”
Son speaks on Postecoglou’s football
Despite the obvious cracks in Spurs’ foundation that were evident after the loss to City, Heung-min Son has chosen to focus on the positives.
Speaking to the Evening Standard, the Tottenham captain said of his manager, “We should understand it’s the gaffer’s first year and he brought so much positivity and different football. I know it’s early to say, but we’ve got to do so much better for next season, because I still believe he can bring so much success to the club.”
Son was also quick to quiet any doubts about whether he and others at the club are starting to question Postecoglou. “I’m all in. I’m loving the way he wants to play,” he said.
“Everybody—the club, the players, also the fans—everybody, has to step up because we have to be all together in this. He’s definitely shown he can bring success to the club.”
Spurs’ loss to Man City eliminated them from qualifying for the Champions League this season. They are one of the betting sites favourites to qualify next season. Spurs will be trying to close out this one strong away at Sheffield United on Sunday.
