Another Group 1 weekend at Morphettville as the Adelaide Carnival continues with the South Australian Derby where our roughie runs
Saturday Racing Tips Morphettville 04/05/24
Morphettville 04/05/24
There is another strong card at Morphettville on Saturday afternoon with an excellent field assembled for the Group 1 South Australian Derby. The race formerly known as the Port Adelaide Cup (now the Queen Elizabeth II Cup) is another feature on the card as we look to take on the horse racing bookmakers once more with our weekly horse racing tips. The other big race on the card is the Adelaide Guineas which features a quality-looking field of 12 heading to post with the rest of the afternoon turned over to a string of competitive handicap contests. Let’s take a look at the three big races of the day with our tips.
(Note: Odds provided by Bet365)
Morphettville Race 6 - Adelaide Guineas (1600m)
Selections:
#6 Sassy Boom (NEXT BEST) - $7.00
#10 Spirit Of Camelot - $2.80
#7 Poifect - $3.20
#8 Stylish - $7.00
BEST BET - #6 Sassy Boom
Was a little bit below her best in the Bendigo Guineas last time out but she was not ridden quite as close to the pace that day as she normally is which might not have been the right move. She was in great form in the summer, saluting in the Group 2 Armanasco at Caulfield, a deeper race than this Listed contest is. She does not have much of a record first up so that Bendigo run is probably worth putting a line through but it has made her much bigger odds here which could be to our advantage.
THE DANGER - #10 Spirit Of Camelot
Unexposed type has only had three starts in her life. The first pair were over 1000m, winning the second of those, before stepping up to 1400m on her debut at this track last time out. She caught the eye that day, struggling to find a path through before finishing strongly once she had found a way out. That suggests that trying this 1600m trip for the first time is going to be a plus for her and she has the potential for much better to come.
VALUE BET - #7 Poifect
Two prior runs over this trip have not yielded anything from her but they were both in Group 2 company so it might be worth giving her another chance over 1600m at this lower Listed level. It was only a Bm70 that she saluted in at Flemington last time out but that would have been a boost to her confidence and it was the first time that Michael Dee had the ride on her. He is booked again and this could be the start of a very good relationship between the pair.
Morphettville Race 7 - Queen Elizabeth II Cup (2500m)
Selections:
#2 The Map (BEST BET) - $2.50
#1 First Immortal - $3.20
#3 Aberfeldie Boy - $3.60
#6 Crimson Vine - $21.00
BEST BET - #2 The Map
Strong stayer was runner-up in the Adelaide Cup over 3200m at this track in March, given seven weeks off between then and now with just a couple of trials to freshen her up for this. She is a real track specialist, winning two of her four prior races over this 2500m at Morphettville, 4th in the other pair, running with credit on each occasion. She looks well treated at the weights for this race given her rating and that of her rivals and granted a decent enough pace, she should prove too strong for them.
THE DANGER - # First Immortal
Won a handicap over this trip at Flemington last July, shaping well in the Bart Cummings at that same track in October. A winner of his only prior visit to this track last May, his run in the Mornington Cup last time out is easy enough to excuse as he found himself a long way back from a wide barrier. There was little pace on that day so he was not the best positioned in a race that was won in a slow time. He has a 60kg impost here, having to give two plus kilos to everything but still represents the biggest danger to the best bet.
VALUE BET - #3 Aberfeldie Boy
A frustrating type who has plenty of ability but he has struggled throughout his career to convert that into winning. He has a single success in 12 starts so far, a poor return for one of his abilities. He was third in the 2022 Victoria Derby before he picked up that sole win, showing that his stamina for this trip is unquestionable. The pick of his form has come on soft ground and that would be the concern for his chance here but even on ground that will be on the quick side for him, it is very hard to see him out of the frame in this field.
Morphettville Race 8 - South Australian Derby (2500m)
Selections:
#15 Coco Sun - $4.60
#4 Bold Soul - $7.50
#1 Antrim Coast (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) - $8.00
#7 Warmonger - $6.00
BEST BET - #15 Coco Sun
This is a quick turnaround having only run last Saturday when a close third in the Australasian Oaks. She was doing some good late work that day over 2000m in what was arguably a stronger field than this. She is up another 500m in trip which she looks like she won’t have an issue with given the way she hit the line hard last week as long as that has not taken too much out of her. She has taken a huge step forward with each start in 2024 and would not need any more to win this. for them.
THE DANGER - #4 Bold Soul
Won a handicap over this trip at Flemington last July, shaping well in the Bart Cummings at that same track in October. A winner of his only prior visit to this track last May, his run in the Mornington Cup last time out is easy enough to excuse as he found himself a long way back from a wide barrier. There was little pace on that day so he was not the best positioned in a race that was won in a slow time. He has a 60kg impost here, having to give two plus kilos to everything but still represents the biggest danger to the best bet.
VALUE BET - #1 Antrim Coast
A little bit of a shorter price for the roughie this week as the money has come for him, cutting the odds. Hopefully, that means that we are on the right track with him given that a combination of his rating at these weights should make him a shorter price than he is, even now. He was second to Orchestral in the New Zealand Derby, saluting in the Alistair Clark on his first start in Australia before being narrowly beaten at Caulfield in early April. This trip is ideal for him and he should be able to at least make the frame to add to his excellent record.
