Saturday Racing Tips - Sunshine Coast 06/07/24

The start of another racing month and while this tends to be the quietest one of the entire year while we wait for the start of the new season, there is still some decent class racing at Sunshine Coast on Saturday where we take on the horse racing bookmakers with our Saturday tips.

BEST BET - #4 Vodka Martini 

Looks like the class act in there for all that this will be his first try on a heavy surface. He has two wins and a third from four runs on soft with those wins both on a Soft 5. A heavy 9 here is going to be a rather different task for him but he has a handy draw and plenty else going for him. First off, he has a handy barrier with a lack of pace pressure on the front end. He has two wins from three runs in this class as well as two from four over this distance of 1000m, so if he copes well enough with the underfoot conditions, he looks the one that they all have to beat. 
 
DANGER - #15 Jayanthi 

Runner-up on both starts on heavy ground, that might be the position where she is seen once more. The slight doubt with her is being first up (better second up) but she has a few pieces of form that read well in the context of this race. She was in flying form in early spring but found life a little tougher in her most recent prep over the summer and the autumn. There is a strong chance that she is going to be able to rediscover her form now that she is back in action again, minus blinkers, and she needs consideration. 
 
VALUE BET - #7 Hakkai Maru 

If the top pick fails to handle the Heavy 9 surface then this mare could be the one to take advantage of that. She loves her racing at this track, with four wins from seven runs over this track and distance, including one on a Heavy 10 back in February. That day saw her a little closer to the pace than is often the case so it will be of interest if she is ridden a little more forward in a race where the pace might not be as strong as is often the case over 1000m. She will wear ear muffs before the race for the first time which is interesting to see if that can help with her race performance.

BEST BET - #7 Hardware Lane 

Boasts an outstanding record on heavy ground, winning five of his seven starts when the mud has been flying. Winner of the Bat Out Of Hell on a Heavy 10 surface on his last visit to this track, he was well below par at Eagle Farm last time out when he was said to have made a noise. That is far from an ideal run to arrive off the back of but if all is well on the ground where he has produced so much of his career-best form, he has to be given another opportunity to show that was clearly not his running. 
 
DANGER - #1 Brudenell 

Well on top in terms of the ratings here at the weights, he is the winner of nine of his 18 career starts and brings some of the top form to the contest. He was fifth in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate in February at Caulfield, one place behind Benedetta. That level of run stands out here and he is three from five when he has run over this distance. He also has two wins from four starts when first up, making his first start since the end of March here. One win in three runs on heavy ground is the potential sticking point with just a BM64 win to his credit when it is this deep. That is the only knock against him. 
 
VALUE BET - #4 Situation Room 

Has three second-place finishes in four starts on heavy to go along with four wins in eight starts on soft so these conditions are going to be a plus for him. He was runner-up to Situation Lane in the Bat Out Of Hell over this track and distance on heavy, one of the stronger runs in his career. The majority of his efforts would not match up to the likes of Brudenell in this contest but his ability to handle the underfoot conditions can make all the difference to his chances.

BEST BET - #5 Know Thyself 

Has only had four races so far in his career, winning three of those and finishing second in the other. The most recent of those came in the middle of June when running riot at Rosehill on a Heavy 9 track, saluting by more than five lengths. There are a few other similarly unexposed types lurking in here as well but none that contain the same potential that this gelding does. The step up to a mile for the first time should be a massive plus for him as he was strongest at the line last time out. 
 
DANGER - #1 Cifrado 

Runner-up in the Gold Coast Guineas on May 15 on his only prior visit to this track, he coped well with the Heavy 10 track that day, albeit only over 1200m rather than the 1600m that he races over here. He was well below par in a Group 3 next up but then he bounced straight back to form over 1350m at Ipswich when only a length behind Hedged. That is a solid run to bring to the table if he can run to the same level over 1600m.  
 
VALUE BET - #2 Xidaki 

Behind Cifrado in the Gold Coast Guineas at this track, finding 1200m types too quick for him, even on deep ground. Just touched off last time out at Randwick, this is a much deeper contest than that BM78 but he showed once more that a heavy surface is no issue for him. It is interesting to see him trying 1600m now and he already has a Listed level win to his credit so perhaps the step up in class here is a gap that he will be able to bridge.

One of the top hoops in Queensland for a long time, Rodd needs a single Sunshine Coast winner to make it 120 for his career, the fourth track at which he will have hit that tally.
