Saturday Racing Tips Randwick 14/10/23

The Everest is the biggest race on Saturday afternoon at Randwick on a card that looks spectacular.

Saturday is Everest day, but that is only the tip of the mountain, so to speak, with an excellent supporting card. The Group 1 King Charles Stakes looks top-notch, and The Kosciuszko looks like an exciting contest with the frame fillers from 2022 all back to have another crack at the 1200m race. The sprinters will hold sway at Randwick, so Saturday is all about speed, and the horse racing betting sites have been buzzing for weeks with the prospect of this day's racing. BEST BET - #7 Opal Ridge
She boasts a perfect 3/3 record when first up in her career, so fresh is the perfect time for her to take on this assignment. She is the top-rated in the contest, and her gear change is a serious weapon in her arsenal. A low draw is perhaps not ideal for a hold-up performer, but there is no one better than James McDonald for finding a path through a field, and he can guide her to victory in the final 150m.

THE DANGER - #1 Front Page
Winner of this race last year, he has not got his head in front in five starts since. They have all come in good company, and he has not been disgraced by any means, but none of those efforts match his win here. That came on a soft 7 track, very different conditions to those he will face on Saturday. That said, he has some solid form on good ground and boasts an excellent record when he is first up as he is now. He has joined a new trainer since he last ran, and this has undoubtedly been the target of this preparation.

VALUE BET  - #8 Mogo Magic
It's hard to know precisely what this gelding will be capable of. His most recent success was only in a Benchmark 72 contest, which is a million miles away from the level of opposition he takes on here, but that took his career record to a perfect 5/5, and he gave the impression that there is still plenty more in the tank to come from him. Officially, he has a massive task here, given a rating of just 89, but it would be no shock to see him take the step up in class in his stride and go close.

BEST BET - #3 Think About It
He has done nothing but improve, with ten wins in 11 career starts. Looked like he was set for a second career defeat at the hands of the re-opposing Hawaii Five Oh last time out, but he outbattled that rival in the final 100m. That was his first race for 112 days, so he is entitled to strip fitter for that run, and it would appear that we do not know the ceiling of his ability just yet. This will be the most challenging task of his career, but he looks set to be capable of taking that step up.

THE DANGER - #1 I Wish I Win
He was an easy horse to root for and probably would have been the tip if he had not been trapped on the inside. There should be plenty of pace on, which is what he needs over this trip, but he will need more than his fair share of luck to find a gap when he needs one. His win in the T J Smith over this track and trip in April was spectacular, mowing them down late and fast down the middle of the track. Deeper ground and a wider draw were to his benefit that day.

VALUE BET  - #6 Buenos Noches 
Things did not fall his way when third last time out in The Shorts - short of room at a crucial stage and only beaten 0.66l at the line. That was over 1100m, and the return to the extra 100m of this race is a big plus for him - after only nine starts, there should be more improvement to come from him. He has a middle barrier to work from, giving him plenty of options early, while a solid early pace will suit this strong sort. Looks like a lively roughie and could easily cause a bit of a shock.

BEST BET - #2 Mr Brightside
Not many more superlatives can be thrown the way of this six-year-old. He has proved to be better than ever this preparation, a perfect three wins from three starts, and never looked in a moment's danger in any of them. He has saluted in back-to-back renewals of the Doncaster on his only two prior visits to Randwick, so the travelling is not an issue for him. Brutally efficient when winning the Makybe Diva on his most recent start, he can continue his winning spree.

THE DANGER - #14 Fangirl
Tenacious mare did not have the race run to suit when behind Think It Over in the 7 Stakes at this track last time. She was far from disgraced in third there, but things did not map out as well for her as when she won the Winx Stakes the time before. That level of form when she beat Princess Grace ties in nicely with Mr Brightside, who has also beaten that mare. Given a stronger pace to chase for this closer, she will be powering home.

VALUE BET  - #1 Think It Over
He showed there was still life in his legs, winning the 7 Stakes over this 1600m last time. The good ground helped him there, and his track position close to the pace was the correct position to be in, given the way the race mapped out. It was great to see the eight-year-old still capable of winning at a strong level, and he cannot be dismissed lightly for all that he faces a more formidable rival in Mr Brightside. He has trialled moderately since, but he knows when the big days are and can perform when needed.
