Saturday Racing Tips Rosehill 23/03/24

Rosehill is the place to be on Saturday with half of the races on the afternoon at Group 1 level, a sensational day is in prospect. 

This could be one of the most talented Golden Slipper fields that we have seen in a long time but there is still one that stands out on the prices with the horse racing bookmakers. Whether he can make the bookies pay, we will find out at the weekend. There are another four Group 1 races on the card, three Group 3 races as well as one at Listed level. It is the best overall card of the autumn so far and very much something to look forward to.

BEST BET - #2 Riff Rocket
Found the gaps weren’t there when he needed them when third in the Australian Guineas at Flemington last time out. There was no disgrace in that performance and the step back out to 2000m here should help him get back to winning form. He was runner-up on his only prior visit to Rosehill and is a much-improved type since that defeat. It will be interesting to see how he is ridden with Nash Rawiller on for the first time with a more prominent position likely to be a plus in this field.  

THE DANGER - #4 Tom Kitten
Has not had a lot of luck in running so far in the autumn, all three of his starts have seen him struggle to get a run from the back. We know that he has the class for this level as he was an impressive winner on his only prior start over 2000m in the Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick. The return to this far might be the key to him but they will not want to get too far back on him in a race where there is not a lot of early pace. 

VALUE BET  - #5 King Colorado
Long looked a smart type but he has just not managed to quite get himself over the line in front when he has had opportunities. Behind Riff Rocket in both the CS Hayes and the Australian Guineas this season, bleeding last time when tried in blinkers with the headgear straight back off now. There is no doubt that he has the natural ability to get himself involved in the finish if things fall right for him but Riff Rocket has had his measure so far.

BEST BET - #1 Storm Boy
Unbeaten in four career starts, he has looked like a real star in the making so far. A proper bull of a horse, he has tanked through his races, shaping as if he can handle a step up in trip in time but he has more than enough pace for 1200m for now. He has not needed too much pushing in his races but when he has been popped a question, he has responded with the perfect answer each time. This is without a doubt his toughest task but he can come through again. 

THE DANGER - #7 Switzerland
Coolmore won this last year with Shinzo and as well as having part of Storm Boy, they have this colt with Chris Waller as a part of their team. He is also unbeaten so far in his career, winning all three of his starts, picking up well to run down Straight Charge in the Todman last time out. There is likely to be a strong pace on here with a number of the Waterhouse/Bott team who like to get on with it on the front end which is going to be a big plus for his chance. 

VALUE BET  - #6 Straight Charge
Only just beaten by Switzerland last time out which is strong form to bring to the table. He is going to face some competition for the lead here which is not going to be ideal for him and he has a slightly worse than middle barrier to start from in nine. He saluted in the Silver Slipper over 1100m at this track last month on a soft surface and is one who will benefit from there being some juice still in the ground come Saturday.

BEST BET - #13 Ozzmosis 
Winner of the Listed Heritage over this course and trip back in September, he has won four of the five times he has raced in his career. He closed out his spring prep in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington. That came from a draw in four, with six of the seven horses who were in a double-figure barrier finishing in the first eight so it can be marked up a touch. Has to take on some horses who have already had a run this prep but can overcome that. 

THE DANGER - #11 Sunshine in Paris
Has four wins plus a second and a third in six career starts, the time that she was third was on the softest ground that she has run on so connections will be hoping that the ground dries out a little bit. She only made it to the track once in her last prep, winning the Group 2 Sheraco over 1200m at this track in September. The three that chased her home were Espiona, Zapateo and Zougotcha which shows the strength of that form. She is a perfect 2/2 when first up and she has a nice barrier to work from in two. 

VALUE BET  - #9 Asfoora 
The winner of eight of her 17 career starts, she is 3-4 when third up as she is here. Ran a big race in the Rubiton first up before a slow start cost her any chance in the Oakleigh Plate last time out. She was 10th that day but was only beaten 2.5 lengths and that is strong form. Ran a big race when she was 4th in this race last year and she should not be too inconvenienced by a wide draw given that she is a hold-up runner. There is plenty of pace for her to run at here which is going to be a big help and she can outrun her odds.

With five Group 1 races on the card at Rosehill on Saturday, it is very much a day that we are hoping the cream will rise to the top for our multi-tip. There has been some criticism of Rosehill’s surface of late with parts of the track overwatered and running dead so we have to hope that there is a green carpet to race on this weekend.
