We look to Morphettville for our Saturday racing tips this week as the Adelaide track takes centre stage with their Group 1 action
Saturday Racing Tips Morphettville 27/04/24
Morphettville 27/04/24
Morphettville has been well rewarded on Saturday afternoon with classy entries heading there to chase down two legendary Group 1 prizes. The Adelaide Racing Carnival is shaping up to be an excellent meeting in 2024 with the South Australian Derby next Saturday and then the Goodwood the week after that. This week sees dual Group 1 action with the Robert Sangster Stakes and the Australasian Oaks each on the card as we do battle with the horse racing bookmakers.

Morphettville Race 5 - Tobin Bronze Stakes (1200m)
Selections:
#1 Arkansaw Kid (BEST BET) - $3.80
#8 Skybird - $6.50
#9 Gumdrops - $10.00
#2 The Novelist - $16.00
BEST BET - #1 Arkansaw Kid
Has been knocking on the door of winning a big prize all season. He chased home Estriella in his first start of this prep with that filly favourite for the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes on the same card. Subsequently, he had absolutely no luck in running in the Group 2 Arrowfield at Randwick, where he had to settle for fifth, just a length and a half behind the winner. Fourth in the Group 1 Coolmore last November, chasing home a couple of horses who have now gone to stud, that level of form makes him very hard to beat here, he just needs luck.
THE DANGER - #8 Skybird
The winner of a Group 2 at Moonee Valley in her last prep, she closed out her spring campaign with a third-place finish in the 1000 Guineas at Caulfield. Both of those races were over 1600m so her recent first-up start at Bendigo over 1100m was nothing more than something to blow away the cobwebs from the summer. She is going to need a touch further than this to show her very best form but up slightly in trip is a plus and she brings Group 1 form to the table in a Group 2.
VALUE BET - #9 Gumdrops
The winner of three of her six career starts so far, the best of those came when she saluted in a Group 3 at Moonee Valley back in March. That was arguably not the strongest of races but it was more the visual impression that she made when kicking clear late on that marked her down as well worth a try at this better level. She will need to up her game another notch here but is unexposed enough to do exactly that.
Morphettville Race 7 - Australasian Oaks (2000m)
Selections:
#2 Wings Of Song (NEXT BEST) - $6.00
#6 Vibrant Sun - $5.50
#1 Pulchritudinous - $10.00
#3 Positivity - $26.00
BEST BET - #2 Wings Of Song
Took a while for the penny to drop with her but now that it has, she arrives off the back of six straight winning runs. She was the solid winner of the Tasmanian Oaks in February but the impression that she made winning at this track in the Group 3 Auraria was that of a Group 1 winning filly in waiting. Four of the first six home were in the front six throughout, it was just this filly and the solid yardstick Mollynickers who made up any ground from off the pace. That was 1800m, the step back out to 2000m is a big plus here.
THE DANGER - #6 Vibrant Sun
Broke her maiden over 1715m at Geelong in November but has gone back in trip for her three subsequent starts, despite running out an eight-length winner on that occasion. She landed a Group 3 prize last time out at The Valley over 1600m, a distance that looked a minimum for her around that sharp track. She promises to be better suited to stepping out over 2000m on this occasion, a distance that could generate some improvement from her.
VALUE BET - #1 Pulchritudinous
In contrast to Vibrant Sun going out in trip, this filly drops down from 2400m after winning the New Zealand Oaks in the middle of March. That was on Soft 7 ground and she was strongest at the winning line so the drop to 2000m on a faster surface does not look an obvious plus. She has moved from Chad Ormsby there to the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable here which has the potential to be a big plus if she is the type to settle in fast given that her last run was only five weeks ago.
Morphettville Race 8 - Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m)
Selections:
#2 I Am Me - $6.00
#12 Estriella - $3.20
#13 Learning To Fly (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) - $15.00
#1 Zapateo - $8.00
BEST BET - #2 I Am Me
Placed in three of her four runs at Group 1 level, two of those have come when second and third to Imperatriz so that is very strong form. Between those two runs over this 1200m trip she was second to Magic Time over 1400m when that filly just proved a little stronger in the final 100m. This is her best distance and there is nothing of the class of Imperatriz in here so she has strong claims of picking up a 10th win in just her 20th start.
THE DANGER - #12 Estriella
This is a big rise in class for the Ciaron Maher-trained three-year-old off the back of a win in the Listed Sunlight Classic last time out. The runner-up that day is our Saturday best bet so a win for that horse earlier on the card is going to be a big plus for this filly. She dominated that contest from the front and ran out a comfortable two-and-a-half length winner. She is going to find it more difficult to repeat those tactics from a wide barrier, especially with Mark Zahra putting up 0.5kg overweight but she has only had seven career starts so could easily have the necessary improvement.
VALUE BET - #13 Learning To Fly
Looked like a star in the early days of her two-year-old career, a perfect 3/3 heading into the Golden Slipper last year as a $6.50 shot but she lost her jockey in an incident and missed 11 months of action. Her return in the Lightfinger was excellent then not quite so good over 1400m last time out. A decent size of field and the likely strong pace are going to be a big plus to her chances and the ability is clearly still there, she just needs things to drop right for her in the closing stages to pick the right alley through.

Jockey Of The Day – Mark Zahra
It is not huge in numbers but it looks like a very strong book of rides for the dual Melbourne Cup-winning hoop on Saturday at Morphettville that includes both our best bet of the afternoon and the favourite for the Robert Sangster Stakes. He will be putting up some overweight on the latter which adds another layer to an already fascinating puzzle to one of the two feature races of the day. It is certainly not inconceivable that he could go unbeaten on his four rides on the afternoon, such is the strength of each one of them.
