Caulfield on Saturday could be a card that the horse racing bookmakers are looking forward to and dreading in equal measures. There are some shorties in the Group 1 races that could make or break their day as well as that of the punters.

Caulfield R7 #1 - Mr Brightside $1.85

Has already added to his Group 1 winning tally this season when saluting in the Makybe Diva. That seventh Group 1 win took his career prize money past the 14 million dollar mark and there should still be plenty more to be earned with him. He has won on five of his eight previous visits to Caulfield, the slight chink in his armour is going to be the 2000m distance. Yet to win over this far in five attempts, it would be harsh to say that he doesn’t stay it as he was beaten a whisker in a Cox Plate but those looking to take him on will be using that as their ammunition.

Caulfield R8 #1 - Broadsiding $1.65

The newly crowned champion two-year-old from last season continues his campaign in the Caulfield Guineas. He has arguably drawn a slightly wider barrier than connections would have liked but that looks only a small negative in what looks like an otherwise bombproof performer. A level weights race is a big plus given that on official ratings he is a street ahead of these. Is 3/3 in Group 1 races so far and the return to 1600m looks a big positive. His most impressive win last season came over this trip in the JJ Atkins and it can prove the case again.

Caulfield R10 #4 - Another Wil $2.80

There is no question that this is the day of reckoning for Another Wil. He was beaten in his only other try at Group 1 level but that was in the Doncaster which was run on a Heavy 9 surface which would not have been to his liking. Behind the re-opposing Pericles that day, if the ground stays close to good, then Ciaron Maher’s horse is going to reverse that form. He was a massive improver last season, going through the ranks with ease. After only 10 starts, there should be better to come from him.
