We have a three-horse multibet for the Caulfield card on Saturday, which pays odds of 16.38 if they all win.

There is some excellent racing at Caulfield this Saturday. Naturally, the Guineas will be the race that the horse racing betting sites will concentrate most on, but there are also some excellent supporting races on the card.

Caulfield R3 #8 - Carini $2.60

Looks ready to step up from handicaps to this Group 2 company. He won with much more in hand than the official margin of 0.3l suggests last time out. He has done his racing this preparation over trips short of his ideal distance, now stepping up markedly to take on this 2400m task. He was third over 1400m two starts back, beaten less than a length by Amenable in a race where he was held up miles out of his ground. That rival has shown that to be smart form since, fifth in the Group 1 Memsie.

Caulfield R9 #1 - Militarize $2.80

Things did not fall his way on his first start of this preparation over 1200m. He won the Group 1 Golden Rose last time over 1400m but did not get the breaks until very late in the day, showing an impressive turn of foot to get himself to the front where it mattered. He won the Champagne over this distance in April, so he will do better now that he is returned to a more suitable distance. Chris Waller has brought him along steadily and can get him to peak at the perfect time.

Caulfield R10 #3 - Amelia’s Jewel $2.25

The winner of nine of her 11 career starts, she has taken to racing in Victoria well. The higher-level opponent has seen her take her form to a higher plane but still gives the impression that she will be capable of better when asked. That has to worry her rivals on Saturday, who do not have many chinks in her armour to try and exploit. She can win from on the pace and off it and when she has a wide trip, as she showed two starts back at Flemington.

Stats and Insights

  • The run for home is 367m at Caulfield.
  • Despite the track being triangular in nature, the draw bias towards low runners is only minor over most trips.
  • Damian Lane has a 31% strike rate at Caulfield this season with an ROI of 74. He gets the mount on Amelia’s Jewel.
  • The bends are banked by about 5%, which makes for better drainage and horses challenging wider to maintain momentum on the turns.

The quality of the Saturday racing keeps improving as we move through the spring carnival. We have arrived at Caulfield Guineas weekend at speed as we close in on the Melbourne Cup meeting in early November.
