It's Underwood Stakes Day at Caulfield, where the Group 1 race is the ninth race of ten in the afternoon.

There is Group 1 action at Caulfield on Saturday afternoon, with the Underwood Stakes headlining an excellent card. The horse racing bookmakers will take plenty of bets on these three selections, and we hope they can land our Saturday multibet.

Caulfield R3 #1 - Red Card $1.70

Impressive on her first run of this prep, bouncing out and making all the running over 1100m at Rosehill Gardens. A Listed winner in May and June, she is a perfect 2/2 second up and will be a short price in this field to continue that unbeaten record. The second of those Listed wins came over this distance of 1200m, so there is no concern with the slight step up in trip. She can find the front early from her barrier in four and maintain the gallop.

Caulfield R6 #10 - Amenable $2.00

He blew apart a benchmark 84 over this track and distance on the first start of this preparation. A slow start will not have helped his cause when he stepped up to Group 1 company in the Memsie Stakes behind Mr Brightside. That level of opposition is a far cry from those he will face in this Listed contest, and it would be rather disappointing if he does not get back on the winning trail before taking another rise in class next time up.

Caulfield R9 #2 - Alligator Blood $3.60

Few more popular horses are in training, and he will be delighted to be in a lineup that does not contain Mr Brightside. He backs up quickly after his strong effort in the Group 1 Makybe Diva, the same route he took ahead of winning this contest in 2022. That was the only time he has run over this trip, and looks well worth another go now that he is a year older. Others have done him for a turn of foot this prep, so this longer distance can help him

Stats and Insights

  • James Cummings has an ROI of 69 in the last 12 months at Caulfield. He runs Red Card in race 3.
  • Blake Shinn, who rides Red Card, has an ROI of 104 this season, with 11 of his 14 rides finishing in the first three.
  • There is a 387m run from the home turn to the winning line at Rosehill Gardens.
  • The track tends to favour those closer to the speed, especially when the rail is a long way out. Saturday sees the rail 6m beyond true, which is about halfway to the maximum.

A $612 potential return from a $50 Stake would be a fine way to enjoy a Saturday afternoon at Caulfield. There is some excellent quality on show across the ten races, with the action looking to provide plenty of clues for future Spring Carnival days.
