Three Group 2 races and a Listed contest form the heart of an excellent afternoon of racing at Rosehill on Saturday.

There is a classy card at Rosehill on Saturday, but heavy ground will make it tricky to negotiate. The horse racing bookmakers will be hoping for some roughies causing shocks on this surface, but we believe three runners will cope fine with the conditions.

Rosehill R6 #13 - Marquess $4.00

Won his maiden on a heavy track when giving plenty of weight away to the second, he has shown some smart form as he has matured. Although he was well-beaten on his first start of this prep, the winner that day has been flying of late. The record of Marquess's second start makes him the eye-catching one in here. He has two wins and a third from when second up - the third was when he was beaten in a maiden by a certain Mr Brightside! This looks like the right time to catch him at his peak.

Rosehill R7 #6 - Lady Laguna $2.30

Heavy conditions are probably not ideal for her - a win and four third-place finishes in six starts, she is running far too well to ignore. She has three straight wins, including a Group 3 at this track last time out over 100m short of this trip. Visually, she was spectacular that day, so she is well worth another try at this Group 2 level, given her form. She has placed in both her prior efforts in this grade but is in better form now than ever, so she can make the breakthrough.

Rosehill R8 #1 - Tom Kitten $3.40

He wasn't given a hard time in the early stages over 1200m on his return to racing at Randwick, but he set a smart time when closing all the way to the line. He was behind Encap that day, and the step out to 1400m will suit the pair, but the selection has a win on his only start on heavy ground, which makes him the one to support the pair. He is well treated at the weights, given that he is the highest-rated of the runners in this contest, and he should be able to land this before heading back into Group 1 company later in the autumn.

Stats and Insights

  • Rosehill is a little over 2000m around with a run-in of 400m.
  • Nash Rawiller has a 24% strike rate at Rosehill this season; he rides Tom Kitten.
  • A low barrier draw is a help over most distances.
  • James Cummings trains Marquess and Tom Kitten. Only Chris Waller has more Rosehill winners in the last 12 months.

A heavy track on Saturday afternoon demands the classy horses act in the wet, and we hope that we have the right three picked out to give the betting sites something to think about. Two of the three have won on heavy, so we look forward to doing battle again.
