There is some good quality action at Caulfield this Saturday with a ten-race card that has some smart horses on show.

Caulfield R5 #4 - Berkeley Square $2.50

It has been a while since this boy last saluted but this looks like an excellent opportunity for him to end that losing sequence on paper. He has been holding his own in group race company all season and is now competing in a race where none of his rivals is close to being able to match his 97-rated ability. He ran a huge race in the Group 3 Easter Cup over track and distance last time out where he would’ve been closer but for being squeezed for room late on. He can make amends for that here.

Caulfield R8 #8 - Bold Bastille $1.85

The Hayes boys have been keen to strike while the iron is hot with their two-year-old filly who makes her sixth start of the season, winning four of her prior five and coming back with a legitimate excuse in the other. She tries 1200m for the first time here which will be the excuse that some will give for opposing her at a short price but she was not stopping at the end of 1100m at this track two starts back so it is hard to see the extra 100m being any trouble to her.

Caulfield R9 #1 - Hedged $2.00

Unlucky at Randwick last time in the Group 2 Arrowfield where he did some excellent late work to miss out by a tiny margin from claiming an excellent prize. He has only raced at Caulfield once in the past when he ran fourth in the Group 3 McNeil last September, chasing home Veight, Legacies and Little Brose, form that looks very strong for this level. This looks a good bit softer than either of those races and he can take advantage of the lesser opposition to get his head back in front again.

Stats and Insights

  • Caulfield is a triangular track of a little over 2000m around.
  • Low barriers have an advantage over most distances.
  • Even with a 367m straight, the sharp bends at Caulfield mean it can be hard to make up a lot of ground from off the pace.
  • This season, Ben, Will and JD Hayes have had 24 of their 76 runners finish first or second at Caulfield. They run Bold Bastille.

The card at Caulfield on Saturday is an interesting mix of races where we are hoping that they run to form and we get some winners in our multibet. They are three of the strongest chances on the day anywhere in the country as we go into battle with the horse racing bookmakers
