Sporting CP manager Rúben Amorim is reportedly Liverpool’s top choice to replace the outgoing Jurgen Klopp this summer. So far, the 39-year-old has avoided being drawn into speculation about his future. That all changed at a press conference in Portugal on Friday ahead of Sporting CP’s top-of-the-table clash against Benfica this weekend.
Amorim told reporters that he cannot confirm whether or not he will be managing Sporting CP next year.
“Can’t make any guarantees,” says Amorim
Ruben Amorim spoke at length about his side’s huge upcoming top-of-the-table clash against their bitter rivals Benfica on Friday in Lisbon, but the conversation eventually turned to his future. When it did, the Portuguese manager could not confirm where his future would be.
The 39-year-old was specifically asked about whether he could confirm his future –like Xabi Alonso did last week, confirming that he would be staying at Bayer Leverkusen next season– Amorim said that “No, I can't make any guarantees.”
He then explained that “Sporting are dealing with their future and I can't decide now because I gave my word, I can't go back on that, so if I don't win trophies, I'm going to leave Sporting.”
“That's been very clear since the start. I felt it was important to get that across to the players because we have to win. We want to win trophies and we'll decide on those things later.”
Many Sporting fans interpreted these comments as Amorim having one foot out the door. The betting sites interpreted it as Amorim being one step closer to taking the Liverpool job.
Next Liverpool manager betting odds
Ruben Amorim’s name has shot up the next Liverpool manager odds list this week. Many of the best soccer betting sites now have Amorim as the top candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp this summer.
At bet365, Amorim is now the clear favourite at $1.72 odds. He’s ahead of Roberto De Zerbi and Julian Nagelsmann, both on $5.50 odds.
Current Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders is listed at $11.00, the same as up-and-coming Bologna manager Thiago Motta.
Why have the odds changed so much in Amorim’s favour? Well, reports from Portugal say Liverpool have made contact with Amorim and are set to make the announcement about his future before the end of this season.
It could still be weeks, or even months, before we know who will be Liverpool’s next manager. Right now though, it looks like it will be Ruben Amorim.
