The number of Manchester United injuries keeps growing. This week, the club released a statement revealing that left back Luke Shaw will miss months of the season after suffering a muscular injury in his leg against Luton Town last week.

Shaw has made just 15 appearances in all competitions for Manchester United in the 2023-24 season due to other injuries he suffered earlier in the year. The English international only reentered the Red Devils squad back in January.

Diogo Dalot is expected to fill in for Shaw. Natural centre back Victor Lindelöf and midfielder Sofyan Amrabat have also filled in for him at left back in the past.

Luke Shaw injury update

Luke Shaw was a doubt for Manchester United’s match against Luton Town last matchweek. The defender ended up starting the match anyway, but was substituted out of the game before halftime with an apparent leg injury. Manchester United have now revealed that Luke Shaw suffered a muscular injury in that match.

The club said in a statement that “Luke Shaw has sustained a muscle injury and will be out for an extended period.”

The extent of Shaw’s injury was not disclosed by the club. However, Man Utd did say that “Further assessment is still needed to determine the severity but we expect him to be absent for a few months.”

Shaw could miss the rest of the season

Given the injury recovery timeline laid out by the club, it’s very likely that Shaw will miss the rest of the 2023/24 Manchester United season.

The Red Devils are sixth in the Premier League right now, just three points behind Tottenham in fifth and five points behind Aston Villa who are in fourth.

Bet365 gives Manchester United $4.50 odds to leapfrog Aston Villa and finish the season in the top four. Other top soccer betting sites actually have the Red Devils as the favourites to finish in the top four, ahead of Spurs and Aston Villa. While the betting sites are confident, not having a bonafide left back will make finishing in the top four a lot harder.

Without Shaw, Man United will rely on Diogo Dalot to fill in for him. Victor Lindelöf can also play at left back. If it comes down to it, midfielder Sofyan Amrabat has been used as a left back.

Other Manchester United injuries

Luke Shaw is unfortunately not the only name on the Manchester United injury list. Anthony Martial, Lisandro Martinez, Mason Mount, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Tyrell Malacia are already out for the Red Devils.

Manchester United’s next match is against Fulham at Old Trafford. They then take on Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup next Thursday.

Mason Mount is the only name on the Manchester United injury list who could theoretically make his return for either of those fixtures. Everyone else is expected to miss at least the next three or four Manchester United matches.
