Mason Mount suffers “minor muscle injury”, will miss a few weeks

Mason Mount joined Man Utd in July 2023 for around £55 million. He has started both the club’s Premier League matches this season

News Insights

  • Mount to miss “a few games.”
  • Man Utd play Liverpool in Matchweek 3.
  • Zirkzee to replace mount.
  • Man Utd signed Mount for £55 million in 2023.

Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount is expected to miss at least the next two games for the Red Devils. The former Chelsea star revealed on social media this week that he suffered a “minor muscle issue” in Man Utd’s 2-1 loss to Brighton last week.

Mount has started both of Man Utd’s two Premier League matches so far this season. He joined the club from Chelsea in July 2023 for £55 million.

Mount injury status clarified

Mason Mount was surprisingly subbed off at half-time against Brighton last week while the Red Devils were trying to come back against the Seagulls.

Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag said after the match that the substitution was precautionary as Mount felt a slight feeling in his hamstring. We now know from the player himself that feeling was more than just a feeling.

Mount posted to his social media channels on Thursday that he “picked up a minor muscle issue.

“I've had it checked and it looks like I'll be out for a few games,” he continued.

Manchester United confirmed in a statement published later in the day.

“Frustrated,” says Mount

Injuries have been a common theme for Mason Mount since joining Manchester United.

The midfielder suffered a hamstring injury around this time last season. He then was sidelined for four months with a calf injury he suffered just a few months later.

Mount says that he is frustrated to have experienced another injury so early into his second season with Man Utd.

“Leading up to and during pre-season, I worked hard to get my fitness back to where it needs to be and I felt re-energised, sharp and ready,” Mount said on social media.

“I wanted you to hear it directly from me how frustrated I am, as I expect you are too. I will do everything possible to be back in the best shape and help the team,” he added.

Mount replacement for Man Utd vs. Liverpool

As unfortunate as it is for Mason Mount to suffer an injury just two weeks into the Premier League season, his absence could be a blessing in disguise for the Red Devils.

Erik ten Hag has opted to play a strikerless system to start the season. If you have read our EPL predictions, you will know that we are not a fan of this.

With Mount out, ten Hag may be forced to start new signing Joshua Zirkzee. Manchester United signed the Bayern Munich academy graduate for £35m from Bologna last month.

Conclusion

Zirkzee scored in his debut against Fulham in Matchweek 1, and has generally looked good for the Red Devils so far. If he starts he could make the difference in Manchester United vs. Liverpool this weekend.
