Manchester United went to Munich on Thursday to face off against German giants Bayern Munich. The Red Devils came into this match desperately needing a result following a string of poor performances in the Premier League.
Instead of getting a result, Manchester United continued their vein of poor form. The Red Devils were easily defeated by Bayern in a wild match that finished 4-3 in the Bavarians favour.
Despite the loss, Manchester United are still favoured by many betting sites to get out of their Champions League group.
Onana mistake condemns Manchester United early
Manchester United and Bayern Munich looked fairly evenly matched at the start of their Champions League encounter. This all changed in the 28th minute when Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana failed to stop a long range shot from Leroy Sané.
The Cameroonian international seemingly mistimed his dive for the ball, which led to him making poor contact with Sané’s shot. The ball ricocheted off Onana’s falling body and ended up in the back of the Manchester United net.
Things went from bad to worse just four minutes later when Bayern’s Serge Gnabry joined Sané on the scoresheet for the Bavarians. A mazy run from Bayern’s 20-year-old midfielder Jamal Musiala drew in multiple ManU defenders, leaving Gnabry open in the Red Devils’ box. Musiala found Gnabry and the 28-year-old German international calmly slotted in Bayern’s second goal.
Bayern did not score again in the first half, but the Bavarians looked completely in control for the first 45 minutes.
Kane gets his goal to stop ManU comeback
Manchester United showed some life in the second half when Rasmus Hojlund scored his first goal for Manchester United. The Danish international scored a very tidy goal from inside Bayern’s box in the 49th minute.
United showed signs of life after getting one goal back, but their comeback was short lived. Harry Kane scored a penalty in the 54th minute following a Christian Eriksen handball in the box.
Both sides had few chances following Kane’s penalty. It looked like we were in for a 3-1 victory for Bayern until the match got turned upside down in the 88th minute when ManU’s Casemiro somehow scored a scrappy goal while laying on his back in front of Bayern’s goal.
Yet another ManU comeback was cut short by Bayern when Mathys Tel scored in the 92nd minute. Casemiro scored another goal in the 95th minute, but it was nothing more than a consolation for Manchester United. The match finished 4-3.
Record breaking poor performance for Manchester United
Manchester United’s loss to Bayern was their third straight loss. This was the first time ManU had done this since April 2019 when they were managed by Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
This match also marked the first time since 1978 where Manchester United have conceded 3+ goals in three consecutive games. The Red Devils last accomplished this unfortunate feat in December 1978 when they were a mid-table side in the old First Division.
Manchester United play Burnley on Sunday. Virtually all betting sites in Australia have the Red Devils as big favourites for that match, so it is fair to say ManU have a good chance of avoiding a fourth consecutive loss this weekend.
As for the Champions League, most soccer betting sites still have Manchester as one of the favourites to get out of Group A, alongside Bayern.
