Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount could soon be making his return to the field for the Red Devils. The England midfielder was spotted participating in training at Manchester United’s training centre, Carrington, this week.
Mount joined Manchester United from Chelsea last June for £55 million (AUD$106.3m). He has failed to live up to expectations so far at Old Trafford, having made just 12 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils this season.
Mason Mount injury nightmare almost over
Mason Mount has been out with injury since last November. His last appearance for the Red Devils came in a 1-0 win against Luton Town at Old Trafford on Remembrance Day. Mount was a substitute in that match. He has not started for Manchester United since his club’s 3-0 EFL Cup loss to Newcastle United.
In total, Mason Mount has started just 12 matches for Manchester United since he joined the club in June. Only four of those starts have come in the Premier League.
Mount’s £55 million transfer to Manchester United was one of the most criticised transfers of the summer transfer window in England. His injury status has not helped things. When he comes back, there will be an enormous amount of pressure on him to set things right as soon as possible.
When will Mason Mount be back?
It’s too early to say exactly when Manchester United could have their star midfielder back. The Red Devils’ next match against Liverpool in the FA Cup on Monday is probably too early for the 25-year-old, but he could be back to the side as soon as Manchester United’s next Premier League match against Brentford on March 30 after the upcoming international break.
Even if Mount is fit, there are some doubts about whether Erik Ten Hag would slot him into the Manchester United midfield right away. Mount did not look like a natural fit playing alongside Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro in a midfield trio when he was healthy.
We are coming down to the business end of the 2023/24 Premier League season, so Erik Ten Hag may not be willing to experiment and change his midfield to accommodate Mount. With that being said, Manchester United’s growing injury list could force the Dutchman’s hand.
Manchester United injury list
In addition to Mount, Manchester United have also been without strikers Rasmus Højlund and Anthony Martial for an extended period of time. Højlund is expected to be back for Manchester United vs. Liverpool in the FA Cup. Martial has been ruled out for the rest of the season.
Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martínez are also out with long-term injuries, leaving the Red Devils very thin at the back.
Manchester United are 6th in the Premier League now. They are four points clear of West Ham in 7th and the betting sites favourites to qualify for the Europa League. Another injury crisis could derail their chances and turn those odds upside down.
