Football Australia signs “landmark” deal
Football Australia announced a record-breaking new broadcast deal on Wednesday. The deal will see all CommBank Matildas and Subway Socceroos’ matches be broadcast on Network 10 and Paramount+ in Australia through 2028.
FA CEO James Johnson called the deal a “landmark” achievement for the federation and for soccer in Australia.
“It brings unprecedented exposure to our national teams and provides fans with unparalleled access to the CommBank Matildas and Subway Socceroos,” he said.
“Innovation is the cornerstone of our approach to sustaining and expanding the influence of Australian football,” Johnson continued.
“These rights are integral to our strategy to secure a transformative broadcast deal that we anticipate will set new benchmarks in the valuation of football media rights in Australia.
“Bringing as much national team content as possible to a multi-platform partner was a key objective from a fan’s perspective, and we are thrilled to achieve this.”
The new broadcast deal includes all Socceroos and Matildas’ matches, starting with the Socceroos’ 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Bahrain on Thursday.
Matildas front-and-centre
While the Football Australia broadcast deal is for all national team squads, the Matildas have taken centre stage when discussing the new $200m agreement.
Matildas star Mary Fowler took time this week to reflect on Australia’s disappointing Olympics run this week before the news of the broadcast deal was announced.
“It was obviously a very proud moment being there (at the Olympics), a second time round, I was really grateful for that experience,” Fowler said.
“Definitely still trying to take positives from it as well, butI think it is hard when you don’t succeed in the way that you want to. It was a nice reminder that you’re not always going to have really big highs in football.
“It’s good to take the growth from that and use it moving forwards,” said the Man City star.
The Matildas were knocked out of the Paris Olympics after losing to betting sites favourites Team USA and to European powerhouses Germany in the Group Stage.
Thanks to the new broadcast deal, soccer fans in Australia can watch the Matildas face off against Germany again this October. Australia will play the Germans in a friendly match before turning their sites on 2027 World Cup preparations in 2025.
