Matildas back sporting initiative ahead of Paris 2024 Olympics

The Matildas may not be one of the betting sites favourites heading into the Paris 2024 Olympics like they were at the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, but that has not stopped them from using their high-profile to raise awareness about girl’s sports.  

New study shows poor youth sports participation 

A recent study conducted by Allianz Australia revealed that 30% of young Australians are on track to give up playing sports by the age of 15. This number is shocking considering Australia’s strong sporting culture and dominance in sports such as rugby, cricket, and swimming.   
 
Even more worrying, the Allianz Australia study also found that young girls and children with disabilities are more likely to give up sports at an earlier age than boys.  
 
The study found that time commitments, financial pressures, competitiveness, and simple waning interest were the biggest drivers behind why Aussie youths are giving up sport so young. Lack of access to sports and anxiety were also cited for girls and children with disabilities.  

Matildas talk to young athlete 

In response to the shocking study, the Matildas took time out of their Olympics prep to speak to a young soccer player about the importance of sticking with the sport.  
 
Via video call, the Matildas spoke to young Aussie, 12-year-old Ashleigh.  
 
“It was really helpful to hear tips from the team, which were so inspiring and something I will never forget,” Ashleigh said after the chat.  
 
“Soccer is something I want to keep playing as I get older and level up so hopefully one day I will be playing with the Matilda’s and captain the team. 
 
“I am never going to stop,” she said.  

Paris Olympics preview 

Like millions of Australians all around the world, Ashleigh revealed she will be watching the Matildas at the Paris Olympics.  
 
“I know they will do really well and I am really excited to see the girls and how they play,” she said. 
 
Unfortunately for Ashley and Aussies everywhere, the Matildas do not have very good chances of winning the women’s soccer tournament this year. 
 
Most soccer betting sites have the Matildas as at best sixth most likely to win the Olympics. PlayUp gives Australia $15 odds to win the gold medal.

Despite their recent slip ups, the US Women’s national teams are big favourites to win at $3.00. Reigning world champions Spain are also listed at $3.00, making them co-favourites with the USA.
