West Australian cricket star Mitchell Marsh is set to get a massive pay raise from Cricket Australia in 2024. Robert Craddock of News Corp has reported that the 32-year-old will be assigned a new contract worth between $500,000 to $800,000 per year.
Marsh closes out 2023 with a bang
2023 was the biggest year of Mitchell Marsh’s test cricket career. The 32-year-old had been away from the Australia Test XI for nearly four years. He made his return at the Ashes in 2023. At that tournament, he was one of the best players in the squad.
He continued his strong performances throughout the rest of the year, including at the recent Boxing Day Test for Australia against Pakistan. Marsh’s stellar performance in that test nearly saw him nearly bat a century. He fell just short and scored 96.
“[Only scoring 96 was] obviously disappointing,” said Marsh. “I thought we navigated our way out of a tricky situation to get a partnership with Smudge [Smith], and I guess there’s a lot of history at this ground, the Boxing Day Test, and a bloody big honours board that I was close to getting on, but it wasn’t meant to be.”
While Marsh was disappointed, he looked towards the future, saying “Shaun got run out for 99 and Dad got 86 here, so Shaun’s technically still got me … hopefully I get one more crack at it.” Thankfully for Marsh, he definitely will get one more crack at it, and he’ll be paid handsomely while giving it another go.
Mega contract coming for Marsh
Mitchell Marsh’s current contract puts him firmly in the middle of the pack compared to the rest of his Test Australia teammates. If reports are to be believed, Marsh’s new contract will make him one of the top five paid players on the squad.
Reportedly, Marsh is set to earn between $500,000 to $800,000 per year. This is a fitting contract considering his strong 2023 and his proposed role at the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
Cricket Australia contracts are doled out on a weighted system where player salaries are determined based on red and white ball rankings. As Marsh is now an important player for all three Aussie national sides, he’s on track to get a massive pay raise.
Marsh is also one of the most well-liked players on the Test Australia squad, so his new deal will likely help morale going into the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup in the United States and the West Indies next June.
