Dan Houston will be staying in Port Adelaide for a little while longer after the Power rejected a massive three-team, five-player trade offer from Collingwood and Gold Coast for the All-Australian defender. Port Adelaide are open to letting Houston go, but they want more for him than what the Magpies and Suns offered.

Power reject blockbuster trade offer
Had Port Adelaide accepted Collingwood and Gold Coast’s trade offer, the deal would almost definitely have been the biggest of the 2024 AFL trade period.
The Magpies offered three players to Port Adelaide in exchange for Houston. The deal also would have sent one player to the Suns.
It is believed that Collingwood would’ve secured Houston and pick 58. Power would’ve come away with picks 13, 29 and 36 and players Jack Lukosious, Joe Richards and Rory Atkins. For their role in the trade, the Suns would take in John Noble and two future first round picks (one from Port and the Pies each).
Reports say that the deal was practically agreed to and that negotiations were going solid. Then, the Power pulled the offer off the table late on Monday night. According to The Herald Sun’s Glenn McFarlane, the Port Adelaide want to hold out for a bigger offer.
“Port Adelaide has pulled back from a mooted deal with Collingwood & Gold Coast that would have delivered Dan Houston to the Pies,” McFarlane revealed on X.
“The Power wants a greater return or will start looking towards a Kangaroos trade. Most parties thought the deal was done, including the Houston camp,” he added.
As frustrating as this is for Houston and the Pies. This makes sense for Port. They overachieved this year, according to the sports betting odds. If they want to be contenders in the future, getting assets for stars who want to leave now is a must.
Other clubs interested
According to Herald Sun and Fox Footy reporter Jon Ralph, the three-team deal that Port rejected is not totally dead. Houston’s team are reportedly desperate to join Collingwood and have “strong-armed” Port Adelaide. That doesn’t mean other clubs don’t have a chance to sign the defender though.
Wooden spoon contenders North Melbourne are the only real contenders to sign Houston. However, they would have to put in a huge proposal to make up for the fact that they can’t offer a 2024 draft selection, which Port wants.
If the deal with Collingwood completely dies and the Kangaroos can’t put together a big enough package, other clubs may come calling.
This deal will either be done in the next few days or on the last day of the AFL trade period. Whatever happens, it should be a massive trade with the potential to flip the AFL betting odds on their head. This story is one we’ll be watching closely.
