Reece Walsh is one of the best young players in the NRL right now. His contract with Brisbane Broncos is will expire in 2025. The club are reportedly desperate to keep him at the Suncorp Stadium much longer than that, and are set to re-sign Walsh to a new, record-breaking, long-term contract.
Walsh set to sign new deal
Reece Walsh joined the Broncos back in 2022. Since then, he’s blossomed into one of the NRL’s best fullbacks. Now, Broncos are worried about losing him. Roosters, Panthers, and several other NRL clubs are reportedly interested in picking up Walsh once his contract with the Broncos ends.
Walsh’s current contract expires in 2025, meaning other teams could tap him up this November. To get ahead of this, Broncos are reportedly set to offer Walsh the biggest contract in their club’s history.
The Courier Mail reports that Walsh will sign a new long-term contract in a matter of months. The deal will be worth a staggering $1.1 million per year over the next five years. This would be a massive 150% pay raise compared to his current Broncos salary.
Walters confident about new deal
A $1.1 million per year contract is massive by any standard. With that being said, Walsh can actually earn even more. Reports say Roosters and other clubs chasing Walsh could offer him as much as $1.3 million per year. Despite this, Broncos are confident of keeping the young star around.
Walsh’s head coach, Kevin Walters, emphatically said “[Walsh] won’t be going anywhere. I’ve just mortgaged the house to keep him here.”
Walters went on to say Walsh was a “long-term player” for the club. “We love having him here and he enjoys being around the place as well,” said the Broncos boss.
Other Broncos deals
Broncos have spent this entire offseason re-signing their “long-term” players and current stars. Ezra Mam, who is also 21-years-old and joined the club in 2022 with Walsh, just signed a new five-year contract.
Club captain Adam Reynolds, who was recently caught on film in a fight with his vice captain Adam Reynolds, is set to sign a new deal as well.
Before all of these moves, Broncos re-signed their star prop Payne Haas to a new $3.5 million contract extension. After signing his deal, Haas spoke about Walsh’s contract situation.
“I am hopeful he signs,” Haas said of Walsh. “I want to keep Reece here, but at the end of the day that’s his decision and I’m not going to tell him what to do. We want him here and hopefully he does re-sign. I’m confident he won’t leave.”
Broncos’ first match of the season is in Las Vegas on March 3 against Sydney Roosters, their main competitor for Walsh’s signature. The betting sites have Broncos as the favourites in this match. PlayUp gives them $1.65 odds to win outright and Roosters @ $2.25.
