Cronulla Sharks vs The Dolphins
The Sharks badly needed to bounce back last weekend after a couple of really poor performances in a row, and they did exactly that against the Broncos on Saturday night. Heading into half-time at Suncorp Stadium they found themselves 12-4 in arrears against last year’s Grand Finalists, but a whirlwind ten minutes to kick off the second half saw them score 18 points by the 51-minute mark of the game to turn the game completely on its head, establishing a 22-12 lead which the Broncos wouldn’t make any inroads into for the remaining half an hour. They held onto their spot in second place as a result, but with so many teams just a couple of games below them they will need to keep winning if they want to stay there. This Thursday, they host one of those teams in the Dolphins, who sit two wins back in fourth place and who will be desperate to get back on the winners’ list after consecutive tight losses. After going down by four points to the Warriors three weeks ago they lost in extra time to the Raiders the week after, but their second bye of the season last weekend put a couple more points on the board for them to keep them inside the top four. But their spot there could hardly be more precarious. They are just a solitary game ahead of the Dragons in ninth and just two games ahead of the Knights way back in 13th, and with a couple of tough games to come the next fortnight could be season-defining for Wayne Bennett’s men. The Dolphins are virtually always competitive and will not make life easy for the Sharks, but heading to Cronulla has not been an easy task last year, and after a confidence-boosting win last weekend the home side can make it two in a row to retain their hold on a top two spot for another week.

Canberra Raiders vs North Queensland Cowboys
The Raiders simply cannot lose a close game, so it would seem. They continued their extraordinary run of close wins which has now extended to a year and a half in their last outing, knocking off the Dolphins by a point prior to last weekend’s bye. That took their record to a surprising 7-5, but like last year their points difference suggests that record is a lot better than it could have been. In the last seven weeks, they have won four games and lost three, but their cumulative winning margin in that time is an incredible eight points, while their cumulative losing margin in the three defeats is 92. If ever there was a stat that sums up their past couple of years, that is it. The Cowboys, meanwhile, put in a shocker last weekend, being pummelled by the Warriors after winning three in a row and seeming to find some decent form prior to that game. Granted they had some Origin related selection issues, but nonetheless it was not a performance befitting of a team that will be playing finals this year. But for all their erratic form, the Cowboys are only one game from the Roosters in sixth and could very quickly find themselves back in the top eight with a couple of good performances. If this is a close game then history would suggest that the Raiders will be winning it, but with a full team back on the park this looks like a good opportunity for the Cowboys to bounce back from last week’s disappointment.
Predicted Squads
Canberra Raiders: 1. Jordan Rapana 2. Nick Cotric 3. Matt Timoko 4. Seb Kris 5. Xavier Savage 6. Ethan Strange 7. Kaeo Weekes 8. Josh Papalii 9. Danny Levi 10. Joseph Tapine 11. Hudson Young 12. Elliott Whitehead 13. Morgan Smithies 14. Tom Starling 15. Simi Sasagi 16. Trey Mooney 17. Ata Mariota
North Queensland Cowboys: 1. Scott Drinkwater 2. Kyle Feldt 3. Villiami Vailea 4. Valentine Holmes 5. Murray Taulagi 6. Tom Dearden 7. Chad Townsend 8. Griffin Neame 9. Reece Robson 10. Reuben Cotter 11. Heilum Luki 12. Jeremiah Nanai 13. Thomas Mikaele 14. Sam McIntyre 15. Harrison Edwards 16. Kulikefu Finefeuiaki 17. Jason Taumalolo
South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Brisbane Broncos
A couple of weeks ago this would have loomed as a very one-sided affair, but the Rabbitohs have at long last found some form. After breaking their extended drought with a 16-point defeat of the Eels and then enjoying another couple of points courtesy of the bye, they put in their best performance of the year last weekend against the Titans. They had seven different try scorers across the course of the game, putting up 46 points against a team that has been competitive in every game for two months en route to a 34 point victory. They hoisted themselves off the bottom of the ladder with that result, but despite their recent little run of form they will still likely have trouble against the Broncos, even on their home turf. The Broncos themselves have hit a little stumbling block over the past fortnight, losing first to the Titans and then last week to the Sharks to fall back to eighth place with a 7-6 record. Fortunately for them, however, they haven’t fallen too far away from the top four with those losses. The Dolphins, who currently occupy fourth spot on the ladder, are just a game ahead, and with the Broncos’ solid points difference they haven’t put their top four hopes in too much jeopardy with those couple of losses. They will, however, be very keen to avoid those couple of losses turning into any sort of streak, and they will be confident that they can do that this weekend. It certainly might take a little more effort to dispose of the Rabbitohs than what it would have during the first two or three months of the season, but the visitors should still be too strong in this one.
Predicted Squads
South Sydney Rabbitohs: 1. Latrell Mitchell 2. Alex Johnston 3. Taane Milne 4. Richard Kennar 5. Jacob Gagai 6. Jack Wighton 7. Cody Walker 8. Davvy Moale 9. Damien Cook 10. Sean Keppie 11. Keaon Koloamatangi 12. Jai Arrow 13. Cameron Murray 14. Peter Mamouzelos 15. Tallis Duncan 16. Michael Chee Kam 17. Tom Burgess
Brisbane Broncos: 1. Tristan Sailor 2. Corey Oates 3. Kotoni Staggs 4. Selwyn Cobbo 5. Deine Mariner 6. Ezra Mam 7. Jock Madden 8. Corey Jensen 9. Billy Walters 10. Payne Haas 11. Brendan Piakura 12. Jordan Riki 13. Patrick Carrigan 14. Tyson Smoothy 15. Xavier Willison 16. Kobe Hetherington 17. Jack Gosiewski
- The Storm have won an incredible 15 consecutive games against the Warriors.
- The Sharks have won five of six games at home this year, with all of those wins coming by at least eight points.
- When the Dragons have lost this year, they have lost heavily; their closest loss was by ten points, while the rest have all been by at least 20 points.

Wests Tigers vs Gold Coast Titans
The Wests Tigers have been reasonably competitive for most of the year, but they were far from that last weekend and there is no escaping the fact that they have now lost nine consecutive games. Last Friday’s effort was the worst of the lot, up against the only team that went near them at the bottom of the ladder last year and one that was expected to again be in that ballpark in 2024. But while the Tigers have been every bit as bad as expected, the Dragons have put a huge gap on them and showed that in emphatic fashion in Round 14. After opening up an early 10-0 lead on the home side, the Tigers were humiliated thereafter, conceding nine tries and scoring just one more of their own en route to a 56-14 loss. With the Rabbitohs winning, that loss deservedly sent the Tigers to the bottom of the ladder. But if ever they are going to have a chance at winning a game, this weekend could be it. The Titans have been really impressive since their dreadful first month, but the continued competitiveness they had shown came to an end last weekend when they were pumped by the bottom of the ladder Rabbitohs. That was a really poor performance and came as a surprise after they had avoided being beaten by more than four points for two months, but disappointing as it was they had shown plenty for an extended period prior to that to suggest that they are certainly not the worst side in the NRL. The Tigers, in contrast, probably are. If the Titans dish out the kind of performance they did last weekend then the home side is a chance here, but this is a good opportunity for the Titans to bounce back and notch up their fourth win of the season.
Predicted Squads
Wests Tigers: 1. Jahream Bula 2. Alex Lobb 3. Declan Casey 4. Justin Olam 5. Charlie Staines 6. Latu Fainu 7. Aidan Sezer 8. Stefano Utoikamanu 9. Api Koroisau 10. Alex Twal 11. Samuela Fainu 12. Alex Seyfarth 13. Justin Matamua 14. Brent Naden 15. Fonua Pole 16. Sione Fainu 17. Reuben Porter
Gold Coast Titans: 1. Keano Kini 2. Alofiana Khan-Pereira 3. Brian Kelly 4. Phillip Sami 5. Jojo Fifita 6. Jayden Campbell 7. Kieran Foran 8. Moeaki Fotuaika 9. Chris Randall 10. Josiah Pahulu 11. David Fifita 12. Beau Fermor 13. Klese Haas 14. Sam Verrills 15. Isaac Liu 16. Keenan Palasia 17. Erin Clark
New Zealand Warriors vs Melbourne Storm
One of the better games of the weekend will see the Warriors host the Storm in Auckland on Saturday evening, with last year’s Preliminary Finalists both coming into the game on the back of strong performances last round. The Warriors put in one of their best games of the year, backing up consecutive tight wins over the Panthers and the Dolphins with a dominant display against the Cowboys. They were electric on Saturday night, putting up 42 points en route to a 30-point win to take their record to an even 6-1-6 and put themselves within half a game of the top eight. The Storm, meanwhile, bounced back from just their third loss of the season the week prior, beating the Knights 36-28. They were a little leakier than they would have liked in that game but realistically looked in control for much of it, opening up a six-point lead at half-time courtesy of two very late tries before extending that to 18 points by the 60-minute mark. The Knights made a little surge late with a couple of tries to close the gap, but it never got within one score and the home side always looked like being able to hold out the visitors.
They held on to top spot with that win, albeit only just, but with a two-game gap in the top four they are a good chance to lock up the double chance once again this year. In a further boost for the ladder leaders, Ryan Papenhuyzen is some chance of returning from an ankle injury this week. Whether he plays or not, this one looks likely to go down to the wire, but the Storm have had an incredible record against the Warriors for an extended period of time. Admittedly that wouldn’t always have a great deal of relevance, but this record is hard to ignore; the Warriors haven’t beaten the Storm since 2015, losing 15 in a row in that time. That information will no doubt be stored in the back of the memories of plenty of players on both teams, and when push comes to shove in what should be a tight game, the professionalism and seemingly endless pits of confidence Storm teams so often exude should see them sneak over the line.
Predicted Squads
New Zealand Warriors: 1. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad 2. Dallin Watene-Zelezniak 3. Rocco Berry 4. Adam Pompey 5. Marcelo Montoya 6. Te Maire Martin 7. Shaun Johnson 8. Addin Fonua-Blake 9. Wayde Egan 10. Jackson Ford 11. Marata Niukore 12. Mitchell Barnett 13. Tohu Harris 14. Dylan Walker 15. Jazz Tevaga 16. Kurt Capewell 17. Chanel Harris-Tavita
Melbourne Storm: 1. Sua Fa'alogo 2. Grant Anderson 3. Reimis Smith 4. Nick Meaney 5. Xavier Coates 6. Tyran Wishart 7. Jahrome Hughes 8. Christian Welch 9. Harry Grant 10. Tui Kamikamica 11. Shawn Blore 12. Eli Katoa 13. Josh King 14. Bronson Garlick 15. Trent Loiero 16. Nelson Asofa-Solomona 17. Joe Chan
Parramatta Eels vs Sydney Roosters
After losing five games on the trot each by big margins, the Eels, courtesy in no small part to the return of a couple of key troops, have recaptured a little bit of form over the past fortnight. Admittedly losing to the Bulldogs last weekend isn’t the result that they would have wanted, but after the way they played earlier in the season, a win against the Sharks and then a competitive loss is a far better couple of weeks than what they are used to. They will, however, have a tough time repeating that effort this weekend. The Roosters have not had the results that they would have wanted this year, but a 7-6 record is not reflective of what they are capable of. They have the best points difference in the NRL and by some margin, having endured a host of close losses and enjoyed plenty of big wins. They had a well-timed week off on the back of Origin Game 1 on the weekend, but prior to that suffered a disappointing two-point loss to the Cowboys that they will be eager to bounce back from. The Roosters should have won more games than they have so far this year and yet still find themselves just a game out of the top four, so with a little more luck in the back half of the year they are in a great position to lock in a double chance, particularly with a relatively friendly month ahead of them from a draw perspective. Though the Eels have shown some improved form over the past month and will likely be a better side moving forward with Mitchell Moses and Clint Gutherson back in the side, the Roosters should be able to come away from Parramatta with the points.
Predicted Squads
Parramatta Eels: 1. Clint Gutherson 2. Blaize Talagi 3. Will Penisini 4. Daejarn Asi 5. Sean Russell 6. Dylan Brown 7. Mitch Moses 8. Reagan Campbell-Gillard 9. Brendan Hands 10. Junior Paulo 11. Kelma Tuilagi 12. Bryce Cartwright 13. J'maine Hopgood 14. Ryan Matterson 15. Joe Ofahengaue 16. Shaun Lane 17. Wiremu Greig
Sydney Roosters: 1. James Tedesco 2. Daniel Tupou 3. Fetalaiga Pauga 4. Joey Manu 5. Dom Young 6. Luke Keary 7. Sam Walker 8. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves 9. Connor Watson 10. Lindsay Collins 11. Angus Crichton 12. Victor Radley 13. Naufahu Whyte 14. Sandon Smith 15. Nat Butcher 16. Sitili Tupouniua 17. Terrell May
Manly Sea Eagles vs St. George Illawarra Dragons
The Sea Eagles are trying to establish themselves as a team capable of challenging the big five which has separated itself from the pack in the Premiership race this season, and though they were unable to get the chocolates against the Panthers last week they certainly didn’t lose any fans along the way. It was an enthralling affair in Penrith, with the first half punctuated by three tries to both Brian To’o for the Panthers and Tommy Talau for the Sea Eagles. Talau made it four in the second half, but unfortunately that wasn’t enough for his side as the collective might of the three-time reigning Premiers saw them escape with a 32-22 win in a fiery encounter. That made it four losses in five games for the Sea Eagles, who have now dropped to 11th place, but as far as runs of losses go theirs has been far from the worst. That victory came against the Storm, while their four losses have been by a combined total of just 19 points and have included last week’s game against the Panthers and a one-point loss to the Broncos. The Dragons, meanwhile, have won two on the trot to jump ahead of Manly into ninth spot, and their victory against the Tigers last weekend was their best in some time as they piled on 56 points in a dominant display. But impressive as they have been in outperforming expectations and in particular over the past month, the Sea Eagles are a solid team that should be working their way up the ladder over the next few weeks. And without wanting to be too critical of a Dragons team that has been very good this year, this might be as high as they get in 2024, and the respective rise and fall of these two teams that appears likely over the back half of the year will likely get started with a Manly victory this Sunday.
Predicted Squads
Manly Sea Eagles: 1. Lehi Hopoate 2. Jason Saab 3. Tolu Koula 4. Reuben Garrick 5. Tommy Talau 6. Luke Brooks 7. Daly Cherry-Evans 8. Taniela Paseka 9. Karl Lawton 10. Toafofoa Sipley 11. Haumole Olakau'atu 12. Ben Trbojevic 13. Jake Trbojevic 14. Gordon Chan Kum Tong 15. Corey Waddell 16. Ethan Bullemor 17. Nathan Brown
St. George Illawarra Dragons: 1. Tyrell Sloan 2. Zac Lomax 3. Moses Suli 4. Max Feagai 5. Mathew Feagai 6. Kyle Flanagan 7. Ben Hunt 8. Francis Molo 9. Jacob Liddle 10. Jack de Belin 11. Luciano Leilua 12. Jaydn Su'A 13. Tom Eisenhuth 14. Blake Lawrie 15. Raymond Faitala-Mariner 16. Ben Murdoch-Masila 17. Toby Couchman
Newcastle Knights vs Penrith Panthers
The Knights have been bouncing up and down the ladder like a yoyo this year, and that continued last weekend when they fell to 14th after enduring their second consecutive loss, this one by eight points to the Storm. They were far from disgraced in that game, but a win did look unlikely for much of it and having scored a couple of late tries, the scoreboard perhaps flattered them in the end. Those two losses came after four consecutive wins, and their tendency for putting together extended streaks of wins or losses looks set to continue this weekend when they welcome the Panthers to McDonald Jones Stadium, which has been far from the sanctuary it was for them last year. The Knights are just 3-3 on their home deck so far this year, and against a Panthers team that will be buoyed by not having to worry about half of their players either missing or playing on an empty tank either side of Origin they will have their work cut out this Sunday afternoon. With a bunch of players missing a fortnight ago they struggled against the Dragons and suffered a disappointing loss, but they managed just fine last weekend against a plucky Sea Eagles side, eking out a 32-22 win in a fiery affair. Without being at their absolute best they have still managed to slot into third spot halfway through the year and have the second best points difference in the league, and they can further secure their spot in the top four this weekend with a solid win up in Newcastle.
Predicted Squads
Newcastle Knights: 1. Fletcher Sharpe 2. Enari Tuala 3. Dane Gagai 4. Dylan Lucas 5. Greg Marzhew 6. Jack Cogger 7. Jackson Hastings 8. Jacob Saifiti 9. Jayden Brailey 10. Leo Thompson 11. Kai Pearce-Paul 12. Tyson Frizell 13. Adam Elliott 14. Phoenix Crossland 15. Daniel Saifiti 16. Brodie Jones 17. Mat Croker
Penrith Panthers: 1. Dylan Edwards 2. Sunia Turuva 3. Izack Tago 4. Paul Alamoti 5. Brian To'o 6. Jack Cole 7. Jarome Luai 8. Moses Leota 9. Mitch Kenny 10. James Fisher-Harris 11. Scott Sorensen 12. Luke Garner 13. Isaah Yeo 14. Trent Toelau 15. Lindsay Smith 16. Liam Henry 17. Matthew Eisenhuth
