AFLW Round 5
AFL 2024 Round 5

The first week in a month of extended rounds in the AFLW, Round 4 kicked off last Tuesday with the Eagles beating the Magpies and finished with the Eagles losing to the Lions, those three making up 75% of the four teams that played two games across the course of last week. Round 5 will see a similar fixture unfold, with the Tigers, Blues, Power and Kangaroos all playing twice between Tuesday and Sunday – with Saturday, of course, a day off in the AFLW to leave a full day of festivities surrounding the AFL Men’s Grand Final. This week’s action kicks off when the red-hot Tigers take on the improved Power, and below we have taken a look at that and the other ten games set to take place over the course of the week.

Richmond Tigers vs Port Adelaide Power

tip!

The Tigers did not start the season as they would have liked, losing to the Eagles by a point in Round 1, but since then they have got better by the week and a big win last weekend saw them jump inside the top four. That 39-6 win over Carlton was their second dominant victory in as many weeks after they beat the Swans by 46 points prior, and leaves them as the only team alongside the Kangaroos to have not yet conceded 100 points across their four games. This Tuesday, they get a great chance to make it four wins on the trot when they welcome the Power to IKON Park.

Port have certainly showed some improvement this year, putting in competitive showings against the Dockers and Crows and beating the Bulldogs easily, but last weekend’s clash against the Kangaroos proved to be a bit beyond their capabilities. They managed just a solitary scoring shot on perhaps the best team in the league, but though that game reinforced the gap between them and the best sides, nobody is expecting them to compete with the likes of the Kangaroos at this stage in their development. They remain a team slowly on the rise, but though they have improved they are still some way off the pace, and up against a Tigers team looking to establish itself as a legitimate top four contender, are likely in for another comfortable loss.

Carlton Blues vs North Melbourne Kangaroos

tip!

The Blues have had a topsy turvy year to date, but put in a really disappointing effort last weekend following two consecutive wins. They were at their best in Round 3, preventing the Cats from kicking a single goal en route to a 29-5 win the week after they beat the Suns by a point, but last weekend it was they who failed to register a major. The Tigers comprehensively outclassed them, ultimately running out 39-6 winners to send the Blues to 2-2, and with a clash against the undefeated Kangaroos to come this weekend there looks to be a good chance that Carlton will suffer a second consecutive defeat.

The Roos started the season, one in which they are looking to go one better than their runners-up effort in 2023, as well as humanly possible, beating the team that beat them in that Grand Final in the Lions by 44 points. They have hardly looked back since. In Round 2 they perhaps took a sideways glance, drawing with the Cats, but they have returned to their dominant ways in the two weeks since, pumping the Demons by 50 points before last week beating the Power 46-6 – conceding just a solitary scoring shot in that game. They have now won three of their four games by at least 40 points, which does not bode particularly well for the Blues. If Carlton dishes up an effort like they did last Thursday then they will be on the receiving end of a hefty defeat, but even if they pull themselves together it’s hard to see them getting close to the Roos. This should be another comfortable win for North Melbourne.

Geelong Cats vs Hawthorn Hawks

tip!

Thursday night will play host to an intriguing game between the Cats and the Hawks, two teams coming off thumping wins in Round 4 but who have had very different starts to the year. For the Cats, the 2024 season has been a grind. Entering the year with high hopes, they were always going to have a rough start to the season with games against the Demons and Kangaroos to start off, and so it proved. They only ended those two games a combined total of two points in arrears of their opponents but failed to get a win, going down by two points to the Dees and drawing with the Roos. Those results were not of any great concern, but a 29-5 loss to the Blues the next week certainly was. But fortunately, they bounced back from that at their next opportunity, returning to the form which made them such a dangerous side last week and comprehensively dismantling the Suns, beating them 96-27. They will hope that is the start of their ascent up the ladder, but they certainly won’t be heading into this Thursday’s clash against the Hawks expecting an easy win.

Hawthorn is probably the most improved team of 2024 so far. They started the year brilliantly with two big wins over the Magpies and the Swans, and though they proved unable to match it with the Crows in Adelaide, they bounced back with their most emphatic performance of the season yet against the Saints last round. The Saints were sitting pretty on top of the ladder having not lost a game heading into that one, but the Hawks changed that and then some in an ominous display. They pumped St. Kilda to the tune of 57 points to take their record to 3-1 and their percentage to an impressive 189.9%, and if they can knock off the Cats this weekend their credentials as a potential top four team will grow even further. But Geelong have been better than their record would suggest so far this year, with Round 3 their only real poor performance, and last week they really appeared to click into gear. This should be a tight and high quality game between two good sides, but the Cats are going to keep climbing up the ladder as the season goes on, and they can continue that ascent with a tight victory on Thursday night.

  • Though the Demons and Bombers sit side by side on the ladder after four games, Melbourne have already played three of last year’s semi-finalists, beating one of them, while last week’s loss to Freo came with a kick after the siren. Essendon, meanwhile, have played just one team that finished inside the top eight last year.
  • Though the Giants have won just one game and haven’t won in the last three weeks, they have only been beaten by a cumulative 14 points in those three matches, while the Eagles last two wins have come against probably the worst two teams in the league.
  • The Saints might have been on top of the ladder with three straight wins to start the year, but they weren’t all that convincing in the latter two of them and once they faced a decent team in Hawthorn last week, they lost by 57 points. The Dockers are fresh off a win over the team that finished 2nd last year.

Collingwood Magpies vs Gold Coast Suns

tip!Few would have expected this to be a bottom of the table clash when the fixture came out, but here we are. Both the Magpies and the Suns find themselves yet to win a game – the only winless teams at this point in the season – and the Magpies, in particular, have been extremely disappointing. They were not expected to be world beaters by any means, but they have been dreadful across their five games, and their two-game Round 4 was nothing short of a disaster. Entering it at 0-3, they faced the Eagles on Tuesday and then the hapless Bulldogs on Sunday, and lost them both. The Eagles are undoubtedly improved under Daisy Pearce but that was nonetheless a disappointing 17-point loss for the Pies, but their effort on Sunday was troubling to say the least. The Bulldogs went into that game with a percentage of less than 25% having lost three of their four games by at least 40 points, but they were able to score nearly as heavily as they had over the four previous games combined en route to a 57-15 win.

The Suns, meanwhile, have at least been competitive in a couple of games, but that couldn’t be said for last week’s effort. After a one-point loss to the Blues and then a draw against the Giants, they came up against a Cats team badly needing a win, and the class gap between the two teams was evident from the outset. Gold Coast conceded a massive 96 points in that game, losing it by 69 points to send their record to 0-3-1 and them to 17th place. In such a short season that is probably a bad enough start to rule them out of finals contention barring a miracle, but they do at least get a great opportunity to finally get on the winners’ list this weekend. It has not been a great start to the season for the Suns, but the Magpies have been as bad as anyone and it’s impossible not to tip their opposition, whoever it is, based on last week’s efforts.

Essendon Bombers vs Melbourne Demons

tip!

The second game of a four-game Friday slate will see two teams in desperate need of a win go head to head, but given the expectations on the Demons they in particular need the four points. They were given a tough draw to start the season, facing the Cats, Lions and Kangaroos in the first three weeks, and while they beat the Cats, they lost reasonably convincingly to the Lions and were subsequently pumped by the Roos. Things went from bad to worse last week when they lost by a kick to the Dockers, and suddenly at 1-3, their top four hopes are evaporating and even their finals dreams will be in jeopardy if they lose this week.

The Bombers have ostensibly had a similar start to the season, boasting the same record as the Dees and a very similar percentage, but their draw has been a hell of a lot easier. They were pumped by the Dockers in Round 1, beat the Eagles the next week and then lost to the Saints in Round 3, while last week they were no match for the Crows in Adelaide – though they certainly are not alone there. Still, the Bombers are looking up against it to even contend for the finals, particularly with a tough game to come this Friday. The Dees have certainly not been at their best this year, but they should be able to overcome the Bombers relatively comfortably and start what they hope will be a steady climb up the ladder over the next few weeks.

St. Kilda Saints vs Fremantle Dockers

tip!

In an interesting little quirk of the fixture, this will be the third consecutive game on Friday that will see two teams which enter the round side by side on the ladder go head to head. This one is a top eight clash between two teams which have enjoyed solid starts to a season in which they are expected to find themselves among a host of teams competing for the lower spots in the eight, but even at 3-1 and with solid percentages they are only sitting in 6th and 7th. The Saints fell a long way after last weekend’s performance; they entered that game on top of the ladder having not lost a game, but a comprehensive defeat at the hands of the impressive Hawks saw them fall all the way to 7th, and another loss this weekend would see them just hanging on to their spot inside the top eight.

The Dockers, meanwhile, put together perhaps their most impressive performance of the year last week. Though it was the smallest of their three wins to date, that six-point victory over the Demons – which followed an eight-point win over the Power – was an inspired performance, as they fought back from four goals down and won with a quality finish after the siren from Aisling McCarthy to win the game. If they can continue to play in that manner for the remainder of the season they will put themselves in a great position to play finals footy. A win on the road against the Saints would be a second terrific win in a row, and with their tails up following last week’s effort, they can sneak over the line to take themselves to 4-1.

Western Bulldogs vs Sydney Swans

tip!

After the way that they started the season, it was hard to see where a win was going to come from for the Bulldogs in season 2024. The only game of their first four in which they got close came when they lost to the Eagles by 11 points – the rest of that patch were all 40+ point drubbings. But fortunately for them, the Magpies came along on the back of four straight losses of their own, and that was all the opportunity they needed. And that’s not to put the result all on the Magpies; woeful as they were, the Bulldogs were much improved in that game, and a 57-15 win over anyone was a big effort considering how they had played over the previous month. This Friday, however, they face a tougher task.

The Swans are not exactly playing brilliant footy themselves, but they are a hell of a lot better than the Magpies team they beat in Round 1. Sydney lost two in a row after that win, but were able to bounce back in a thriller against their cross-town rivals last weekend. Desperately needing a win, they were just able to hang on against a fast finishing Giants outfit, winning by three points to even their win/loss ledger at two apiece. They now have a great chance to potentially jump inside the top eight with a win. The Bulldogs were so much better last week than they have been, which makes them a little hard to read, but as improved as they were, the Magpies are so bad at the moment that wins over them probably don’t carry all that much credibility. The Bulldogs will obviously take any win they can get at the moment, but picking up a second in a row against the Swans might be a bridge too far.

North Melbourne Kangaroos vs Richmond Tigers

tip!

What a test this will be for the Tigers. The Kangaroos have established themselves as the team to beat in a competition with plenty of good sides so far this year, with a couple of thumping wins over fellow contenders showing what they are capable of. They enter Round 5 undefeated, though this will be their second game in five days after they also take on the Blues on Wednesday night. That will be a tough turnaround, but so impressive have North Melbourne been so far this year that they appear to have plenty of room to play below their best and still beat most teams in the league with relative ease. What’s more, the Tigers will also be playing their second game of the round, though they will have an extra day’s break and have been playing some pretty solid footy themselves.

Their season did not start off the way they would have liked it when they lost a game they would have expected to win against the Eagles by a point, but they picked up three on the trot after that in increasingly impressive fashion. They kick off this round with a clash that they really should be winning at home against the Power, too, and if they do what they are expected to there they will enter this game with a very impressive 4-1 record. But as yet, the improved Tigers have not played any of the top four or five teams this year. Impressive as a couple of their wins have been, they have been against mid-lower table sides, and the Kangaroos will present easily their toughest game of the season. Led by the imperious Monique Conti, they can give the Kangaroos some sort of run for their money, but the Roos are impossible to go past at the moment and should be able to secure potentially their second win of the week on Sunday.

Greater Western Sydney Giants vs West Coast Eagles

tip!

It’s not that a team with one win from four games has a percentage of 138.9%, but that’s exactly where the Giants find themselves. They’ve shown plenty of improvement across the first month of the season, but things could have been a lot better than they are, too. After a dominant Round 1 victory over the Bulldogs they have failed to win their last three games, but that stretch has included a draw with the Suns, a one-point loss to the Blues and last weekend a three-point loss to the Swans. They could very easily have picked up another win or two, but this weekend they get a great opportunity to right the ship to some extent at home against the Eagles.

West Coast, however, have also shown plenty of improvement, their first season under Daisy Pearce already yielding three wins from their first five games. They had a busy Round 4 as one of the four teams playing two games, and split those games with a win and a loss. Their win was a solid performance over the hapless Magpies, but after playing probably the worst team in the league they had a much tougher second game for the week against one of the best, and unsurprisingly, the Lions proved far too good. They now face a team somewhere in the middle, and the way they have played under Pearce so far, they are every chance of knocking off the Giants. But GWS have played decent footy this year, even if they haven’t got the results. In a close game, they can finally get back on the winners’ list.

Brisbane Lions vs Adelaide Crows

tip!

There are a number of intriguing games over the course of an extended Round 5, but none more so than this top of the table clash. The Lions and the Crows are right up there in the race for Premiership favouritism, with only the Kangaroos keeping them from being one and two in that metric. On the ladder, however, that is exactly where they sit entering Round 5. They have lost just one game between them all season, that coming for the Lions in Round 1 when they were pumped in a Grand Final rematch by the Kangaroos. But since then, they have proved that such a result will likely be an anomaly this season. They beat the Demons by three goals the next week, and have won each of the three games since by at least seven goals, two of those coming within the space of a few days last week.

But the Crows will pose a much sterner test than the Bulldogs and Eagles did last week. Adelaide comes into Round 5 sitting clear on top of the ladder having won each of their first four games, and none of them has been particularly close. The 14-point defeat they handed to their cross-town rivals in Round 1 was the closest any team has got to them, and last week’s 33-point win over the Bombers was their second by that margin in the last three weeks. Both of these teams have been accustomed to picking up comfortable wins over the past few weeks, but don’t expect either of them to get what they are used to in that regard this weekend. This should be a brilliant game which may very well be a preview of something to come much later in the season, and in a thrilling game the Lions, playing in their home state, can hand the Crows their first defeat of the year.

Port Adelaide Power vs Carlton Blues

tip!

Round 5 concludes with the second game of the week for both the Power and the Blues, and it looms as a close one. The Power have shown demonstrable improvement this year despite picking up just a solitary victory across the first month, and will come into this one after what will likely be a tough game against the Tigers five days earlier. But so far, they have been competitive against everyone except for the Kangaroos – who handed them a 40-point loss last week – and there are plenty of other teams who will also struggle against the Roos this year, so we won’t hold that against them.

The Blues, meanwhile, have put in a couple of really poor performances, being pumped by the Hawks in Round 1 and the Tigers in Round 4, but on the other end of the spectrum they have held the Cats goalless in one of their two victories in the first month – a confusing run of form to say the least. They have been pretty erratic and won’t be thrilled with their inability to play near their best in two out of their first four games, and with this game coming just four days after they take on the Roos they will be hard-pressed to find their best in this one too. A four-day break is far from ideal at the best of times, let alone with travel included and with the first game coming against probably the best team in the league. The Blues may very well enter this game at 2-3 and really needing a win to prevent their season beginning to spiral, but the Power, back on their home turf and with an extra day’s break, might just be able to sneak out a tight win.
