It is another Saturday of action at Flemington, and we have three horse racing selections for the card of 10 races.
Saturday Racing Tips Flemington 20/01/24
Flemington 20/01/24
A fascinating card at Flemington on Saturday with some good quality handicap action. Some smart, unexposed types are stepping up in grade on Saturday, but this could be a stepping stone into something better in the autumn. We also have a big price, a $21.00 roughie who could be well suited to a bigger field and potentially a strong pace to chase. We are still a few weeks off from the return of the Group 1 race action, but these good handicaps will provide plenty of excitement for those looking to do a bit of online betting over the weekend.

Flemington Race 4 - Be A Mate, Nominate Trophy BM84 (1100m)
Selections:
#7 Stefi Magnetica (NEXT BEST) - $2.90
#1 Austmarr - $4.00
#3 Spicy Mags - $6.50
#2 Celestial Storm - $8.00
BEST BET - #7 Stefi Magnetica
She has done her winning at a lower level than this, but her stable is adept at finding suitable races in the city for their winners at the smaller country tracks. She was a straightforward winner at Orange last time out on her first race since July. Entitled to step up on that win here in terms of fitness and is very interesting at this level. She has run on soft ground in the main, her good ground form coming in a Group 3 at Rosehill last January. That was a very smart race for the grade, with the form working out well since, and a repeat of that on good ground would see her win this.
THE DANGER - #1 Austmarr
She has not raced since September, when she comprehensively outclassed in a Group 3 contest. It is unfair to judge her harshly, given that her win the time before was only in a BM64 contest. This is still considerably deeper than that Sandown Hillside win but he should find things a bit easier than that Group 3. Her two wins have both come on a soft surface, but she should not worry too much about this slightly quicker ground with the potential for better things to come.
VALUE BET - #3 Spicy Mags
A strong run here would be a good plus for our roughie later on, as this jockey and trainer combination has a brilliant record when they team up. This is a deeper race than the one that she won over 1000m at this track last time out, and she was unable to get her head in front in her first six starts but has done so twice in her previous three, so it looks to be a progressive type to keep on the right side of.
Flemington Race 7 - VRC Super Saturday, 9 March BM84 (1200m)
Selections:
#3 Rey Magnerio (BEST BET) - $3.20
#1 Jungle Jim - $3.60
#4 Dehorned Unicorn - $5.00
#9 Pink Beau Ty - $9.00
BEST BET - #3 Rey Magnerio
He was a winner for us a fortnight back at Geelong, finishing off strongly over 1100m. He looks well set for the step back out to 1200m here with a nice pace to chase from his main danger, who will be setting the fractions. He has only had seven races, winning five, including the last three on the bounce. It was a gap of eight weeks between his previous two starts, so he might be able to step up a little more from that, especially with so few miles on the clock.
THE DANGER - #1 Jungle Jim
He is the pace angle in the contest and might get a relatively soft time of things on the front. He has two wins and a second in four starts at Flemington, including a win over this track and distance on his last start. He was behind Pink Beau Ty the start before that at The Valley, but it would appear that this straight track is more suitable for him than around a sharp bend there so he can get his revenge. If he gets a soft lead, he is the most significant danger to our best bet of the afternoon.
VALUE BET - #4 Dehorned Unicorn
He has been racing in slightly stronger company than this in recent starts, so he can do better now that he is back in class. It has been a good while since he last got his head in front, so others are preferred for win purposes, but he has a level of form that should see him involved in the finish if he can reproduce that. When trapped wide, he did not get the best run around on his most recent start. This should map out a bit smoother for him, which could make the difference.
Flemington Race 8 - TAB Australian Cup Race day 30 March BM70 (2000m)
Selections:
#14 Divine Purpose - $5.50
#10 Torranzino - $8.50
#16 Stormy Grey (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) - $21.00
#6 Enotis - $13.00
BEST BET - #14 Divine Purpose
It’s been a while since she last got her head in front, but she ran a great race when she stepped up to a similar trip at The Valley last time out. Her winning form has all been over shorter trips, producing smart efforts in slightly better races than this and on ground that ranges from a Good 4 down to a Heavy 10. She has finished second and third in the two races in this grade that she has run in in the past, and now that she is over this trip again, there is a strong chance that she can step up to that level here.
THE DANGER - #10 Torranzino
A winner at Caulfield last July, he produced a similar level of form at The Valley on his next start. Two races in his current preparation have come over a shorter trip than this, including in the Woodford Cup at Warrnambool last time out. Each of his wins has come on soft ground, so he could do with some slightly softer ground than he will get here, but his level of form entitles him to be right in the mix.
VALUE BET - #16 Stormy Grey
She has only had nine starts in her career and is now looking ready to take this step up in class. She was a close second over a longer distance at Cranbourne and then saluted when dropped to a similar distance to this at the same track. She should get a perfect sit behind the leaders here from an inside barrier, with a big field liable to see this run at a fair pace. Blake Shinn does well when he rides for this stable, and his booking is very interesting on this roughie.

Jockey Of The Day – Carleen Hefel
On Wednesday, the 33-year-old rode out her apprentice claim when saluting aboard Magnaspin at Sandown Hillside. She can still take some weight off at Flemington on Saturday, which has given her a couple of short-priced chances and some roughie rides that the betting sites have dismissed. Her confidence will be high after this week, and with a favourite’s chance in the first race, she could carry that through the afternoon.
