No talks about new Tottenham contract, says Son

Son Heung-Min is fourth on Tottenham’s all-time top goal scorers list with 164 goals in 414 official matches for Spurs

News Insights

  • Son joined Spurs in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen.
  • Son’s current Tottenham contract ends in June 2025.
  • Spurs have not talked with Son about a new contract.
  • Tottenham have an option to extend Son’s contract by one year.

Tottenham winger Son Heung-Min revealed to the media this week that there have been no talks between himself, Daniel Levy, Ange Postecoglou, or anyone else at Spurs about signing a new contract. The South Korean international’s current deal expires in June 2025. Tottenham have an option to extend the contract by one more year.

Son also joined Rodri and other notable players in criticising FIFA and UEFA about the number of matches top players have to play every season.

No contract talks

Speaking on Wednesday at a press conference ahead of Spurs’ UEFA Europa League clash against Azerbaijani side FK Qarabag, Son was asked a question about his future with Tottenham and whether he and the club have spoken about a new contract.

“We haven't talked about anything yet,” Son responded. He then clarified that this was more his choice than Tottenham’s.

“It is very clear from me. I am very focused on this season,” Son explained, “At this age, every second is like a goal, especially this season. We are in a lot of competitions. It feels like I am taking even more care about this.”

“I want to win something”

Son joined Tottenham in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen for a reported £22 million. Since then, he has not won a single trophy with Spurs. Son says he is focused on changing that this season.

“As I say, I am fully focused on this year and just want to win something that everybody at the club, the players, (everyone) deserves. That's what I'm working for,’ Son said.

“In the future you never know what will happen, but I will give everything for this club because it's been almost 10 years and I give everything. I still have a contract with the club which is the very important thing and I just want to give everything until my contract expires.”

“There are a lot of games”

After talking about his aims for this season, Son then talked about the pressure players like him are under and the number of games he has to play.

“There are a lot of games, a lot of travelling. We have to look after ourselves, which is sometimes very hard. Sometimes, mentally and physically you are not ready and then you go onto the pitch, the risk of injury is massive,” Son explained.

“We are not robots so I think we have to look after that, reduce the games definitely and playing better quality games should be the aim.”

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has been leading the charge on this issue. He called for a potential strike, before unfortunately tearing his ACL against Arsenal last weekend.

Conclusion

Tottenham have an option to trigger an extra year on Son’s contract. However, if the player wants to leave next year, Spurs will probably allow it due to his decade of service at the club. He is fourth on Spurs’ all-time top goal scorer list with 168 goals.
